Note: | Jean Constant Raymond Renefer 'Jean Renefer': A twentieth century French painter, printmaker and illustrator, Jean Constant Raymond Renefer studied art and architecture in Paris at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, under Paulin. During his career Renefer was a frequent exhibitor at both the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Independants. He was the recipient of such awards as the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur and the Croix de guerre. |
During his long and successful career Jean Renefer created original prints both as individual designs (such as this example) and as illustrations for many fine livre's d'artiste. In this latter category he illustrated such great books as Tynaire's La maison du peche (1922), Delarue-Maltrus's, Le Cigale (1924), Loti's Mon frere Yves (1927), Audoux's L'Atelier de Maire-Claire (1930), Istrati's, La maison Thuringer (1935), Morand's, Air indien (1937), Duhamel's Cecile parmi nous (1941) and Giraudoux's Bella (1947).
Published in 1905, Chantier de Pierre a Grenelle (Stone Yard at Grenelle), is an earlier example of Jean Renefer's original art. Even at this time, however, he conveyed his imagery with both force and economy in simple, telling lines. After 1920 the artist worked almost exclusively in the medium of wood engraving.
