Note: Anton Rausch: A well-known German painter and etcher, Anton Rausch took his formal art studies under w. Von Diez and Peter Halm. It was from Halm that Rausch learned the techniques of fine etching and engraving.
As a practicing artist, Anton Rausch shared a strong bond with German master painters and engravers of the past, particularly the vibrant era of the German Renaissance. One need look no further than the engravings of Durer and Cranach to see how Anton Rausch incorporated characteristics of these masters into his own art. But Anton Rausch was not a mere copyist. In Mother and Child, for instance, His structural handling of both the primary figures and the landscape elements in the background bear strong Expressionist lines and sculptural qualities. Movement and gesture serve to reinforce the unbreakable bond between the mother and her newly born infant.
Anton Rausch was equally adept at both landscapes and religious depictions. In this latter category he created many etchings and engravings upon the theme of the Madonna and Child. Mother and Child is no doubt a variation upon this universal theme. Examples of Anton Rausch's engraved work are now housed in the permanent collections of galleries in Munich and southern Germany.
During the 1920's most of Anton Rausch's original etchings were published in Berlin by Wohlgemuth and Lissner in editions of 200 impressions. Several of his etchings were also published by the art journal, Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna, in large, unsigned editions.
