Columber Spaniel (Die-Cut)

Title: Columber Spaniel (Die-Cut)
Publisher: Raphael Tuck & Sons, London
Date: C. 1880
Medium: Original Chromolithograph
Source: Die-Cut
Note: Raphael Tuck & Sons: The lithographic publisher, Raphael Tuck and Sons, dominated the die-cut market in Britain during the 1880's decade. Although, their art was printed in Germany, the images were directed for a thoroughly British audience. The subjects for die-cut lithography covered a wide range. Animals, soldiers, children, flowers, country scenes and tradesmen were frequently depicted. Because of their beauty and appeal, die-cuts were most often mounted in keepsake albums. As well, greeting cards of the nineteenth century were usually handmade, and die-cuts were the most favored decorations. This original chromolithograph depicts a miniature image of a columber spaniel published by Raphael Tuck & Sons around 1880.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for the original printmaking of everything from miniature images to large posters during the last half of the nineteenth century. The far less costly advances of photomechanical methods, however, made this original and complex form of art all but obsolete by the turn of the century. Yet, no other technique has come close to capturing the deep and rich oil based colours of the original chromolithograph.
By 1870, further elaborate techniques had been added to the chromolithograph. Embossing, multiple hues and raised printings created almost three dimensional qualities. The Die-Cut was perhaps the most complex innovation. During the latter nineteenth century colour lithographic printers and publishers in both Germany and Britain developed a method where their images could be cut into shapes during the printing process by a type of punch-out tool called a die, such as this original chromolithographic die-cut depicting columber spaniel. By 1880 the die-cut chromolithograph reached its pinnacle with the most colourful and complex imagery standing out in direct relief, as one can see from this original example.
Original die-cut chromolithographs have today become very scarce. Most of the surviving cut-out designs have inevitably suffered from chipping and breakage, and very few have come down to us in such fine condition as this original example. As one can here see the nineteenth century die-cut chromolithograph was simply a spectacular example of Victorian era printmaking techniques.
