Raphael Tuck & Sons

A Snow Queen (Post Card)

Title: A Snow Queen (Post Card)
Publisher: Raphael Tuck & Sons, London
Date: c. 1895
Medium: Original Embossed Chromolithograph
Note: Raphael Tuck & Sons: The lithographic publisher, Raphael Tuck and Sons, dominated the post card market in Britain during the 1880's decade. Although, their art was printed in Germany, the images were directed for a thoroughly British audience. The subjects covered a wide range. Animals, soldiers, children, flowers, country scenes and tradesmen were frequently depicted. Because of their beauty and appeal, these post cards were most often mounted in keepsake albums. This original British chromolithographic post card was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons around 1895. It depicts a young woman dressed in red in the snow.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for the original printmaking of everything from miniature images to large posters during the last half of the nineteenth century. The far less costly advances of photomechanical methods, however, made this original and complex form of art all but obsolete by the turn of the century. Yet, no other technique has come close to capturing the deep and rich oil based colours of the original chromolithograph.
