Note: | Raphael Tuck and Sons: The lithographic publisher, Raphael Tuck and Sons, dominated the die-cut market in Britain during the 1880's. Although their art was printed in Germany, the images were directed for the British audience. The 'Die-Cut' was perhaps the most complex innovation. It not only used the elaborate techniques of chromolithography, embossing, multiple hues and raised printings to create an almost three dimensional quality, it also developed a method where their images could be cut into shapes during the printing process by a tool called a die. By 1880 the chromolithographic die-cut reached its pinnacle with the most colourful and complex imagery standing out in direct relief. This original chromolithograph was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons around 1880. The die-cuts depict a group of sheep in a landscape. |
