Savo Radulovic: A twentieth century painter and printmaker, Savo Radulovic lived in and exhibited his art in both the United States and Yugoslavia. Born in Montenegro, Radulovic immigrated to the U.S.A. with his family at the age of ten. He initially settled in St. Louis and studied art there at both Washington University and at the St. Louis School of Fine Art. Radulovic began exhibiting his art at the Midtown Gallery, St. Louis, in 1939, and at the A.C.A. Gallery, New York City, in 1940. In St. Louis he was also the owner and director of an informal, combined cafe, bar and arts establishment named “Little Bohemia”. |
In 1941 Savo Radulovic joined the U.S. Army and served as an official war artist. In the winter of 1944 he was with the 34th Infantry Division in Italy, near Bologna. There he painted scenes of some of the heaviest fighting of the Second World War. Several of these paintings are now housed in the History Section of the War Department of the Pentagon, Washington, DC. |
After the war, Savo Radulovic was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and completed his art studies in Rome at the Academie Belle Art in 1949 and 1950. At this time he had also moved to New York City and had opened his own gallery, the “Artists Little Gallery”, which he maintained into the early 1970’s. During this period his fine art was also exhibited at such major venues as the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Today the art of Savo Radulovic is included in the permanent collections of William and Mary College, Williamsburg, VA, the Pentagon and the Museum of Modern Art, Dubrovnik. |

It seems that Savo Radulovic maintained a studio in this city as the original owner of this piece noted this on the back of the board in which it had been framed. The owner wrote, “Savo Radulovic I met at his studio across (from) our Hotel Exelcior in Dubrovnik – well respected artist – was in U.S.A. & planned to visit U.S.A. again.” Radulovic’s art was also featured in a 1963 solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Dubrovnik (Dubrovnik Galerija Umjetnicka). Dubrovnik is a beautiful Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea located within the area of Dalmatia. In 1979 it was named a World Heritage Site. |
