Note: |
Wolfgang Rabe: A well known German painter, print
maker and sculptor, Wolfgang Rabe studied art in Munich. He first began
to exhibit his art nationally in the late 1920's. Rabe's early work was
mainly in the fields of later Expressionism and Abstraction. His paintings
and sculptures were well received within artistic circles but the rise
of the Nazis to political power placed his career -- like the careers
of so many promising German artists -- in darkness. |
|
After the termination of World War Two (1945),
Wolfgang Rabe began to exhibit his art again through Western Germany.
By this point in time, however, the artist had abandoned abstractionism
in favor of surrealism. He stated that a surreal approach to art was the
only sane way to survive in a society that was completely isolated by
'a brick wall running through the centre of Berlin'. Wolfgang Rabe's art
is now included in many major collections, including the museums of Berlin
and Munich. |
