Wilhelmina Schutz Pulsifer 'Mina Pulsifer': One of California's greatest
women artists, Wilhelmina Schutz Pulsifer was born and raised in Leavenworth, Kansas,
and studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute under Nicolai Fechin. She moved to San
Diego in 1924 and resumed her art studies at the San Diego Academy, under
Eugene de Vol and Otto Schneider. She also took independent lessons in
portraiture and figure studies from Frederick Taubes. |
|
Mina Pulsifer was a full member of the San Diego Art Guild
and served as its President in 1944. Her art was included in many major
California exhibitions, including the California Pacific International
Exposition of 1935, the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco (1940),
La Jolla Art Center (1943), the San Diego Fine Art Gallery (1948) and
other important institutions. Today her original lithographs, engravings and woodcuts are
housed in the collections of the Boston Public Library, the Bibliotheque
Nationale, Paris, the Indianapolis Museum of Fine Art, the National Museum, Jerusalem, as well as in major
public galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. |
|
In the mid 1940's, Mina Pulsifer began to dedicate
herself to the art of lithography. She was awarded the first prize in
lithography from the San Diego Art Guild Annual only a year after creating her first
lithograph. During that time, the Associated American Artists of New York commissioned
three lithographs from her. Both La Familia (The Family) and Paulyn,
(Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tom, San Diego) were published
by the A.A.A. in 1949. The study of a young girl,
Mai-Jean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tom may also have been one of them. The Associated
American Artists of New York was founded in the mid 1930's. It was to become a major forces in the
promotion of original graphic art (fine art prints), throughout the United States and other countries.
The firm would also include original paintings, watercolors, and other media as part of their inventory in later years.
They commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton,
Reginald Marsh and other major artists from around the world. All A.A.A. works of
art were published in editions ranging from 125 to 250 impressions. |
|
"La Familia" is a brilliant
example of Mina Pulsifer's lithographic art. Portraying a Mexican family, the beautiful
modeling of the faces and the emotions that are expressed could only be achieved by a gifted
hand. It is both a wonderfully executed and powerful work of original art. Other examples of her
lithographs include, Mother and Child, 1947 (mother kissing her baby), Bene, c. 1947
(3/4 study of a woman), Bicyclists, 1949 (Night Riders),
Homeward Bound, 1949 (night scene with skyscrapers and people with umbrellas escaping the rain),
and Unloading Tuna, c. 1946-1949 (men unloading baskets of fish at the dock). |
