Si J'Avais Vingt Cinq Mille Francs De Rente! (Les Ouvriers de Paris, Le Charivari)

Clement Pruche's original lithograph, "Si J'Avais Vingt Cinq Mille Francs De Rente !" (If I had Twenty Five Thousand Francs of Income) is the twelfth print from the series Les ouvriers de Paris (The Working Classes of Paris) which was published in Paris by 'Le Charivari' sometime between 1835 and 1840. The entire caption in the lower margin reads,"Si j’avais vingt cinq mille francs de rente! Je ne dinerais jamais qu’a la barriere! et j’aurais tous les jours des cotelettes aux cornichons!.’" which loosely translates to (If I had twenty five thousand francs of income! I would never have a barrier to dine! and every day I would have cutlets with pickles!) The word, ‘barriere’, might also refer to the ‘barrieres’, which at that time were lower class establishments (usually found on the outskirts of the city) for eating and, most particularly, drinking. They were also home to such festivities of ill repute as the ‘bals publiques’. This particular impression of "Si j’avais vingt cinq mille francs de rente!" is a ‘Sur Blanc’ impression. Sur Blanc impressions were published by both Le Charivari and La Caricature. Printed in small numbers, these impressions were individually published on a heavier and superior, wove paper, and are without the publication’s usual text on the verso. It is signed in the stone by Pruche to the lower right, and contains the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger et Cie. R. du Croissant No. 16", "Chez Aubert, Pl. de la Bourse.", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin. This is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the French artist, Clement Pruche.

Note:	Clement Pruche: A French nineteenth century painter, designer and lithographer, Clement Pruchet developed a reputation for both his genre scenes and caricatures. Pruchet studied art techniques under the great master, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). He began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1834 and was an annual participant there until 1870.
	During the heyday of French satirical art (approximately 1830 to 1850), Clement Pruchet created many lithographs for such leading publications as Le Charivari and La Caricature. These included such series as Caricatures du jour, Les chemins de fer, Les desagrements de Paris, Les domestiques, enfantillages, Inconxenients des voitures publiques, Mesaventures comiques, Les ouvriers de Paris, Les sep. peches capitaux, Les Petits metiers, Pochades de Carnaval. This original lithograph entitled, "Si j’avais vingt cinq mille francs de rente!" hails from the 'Le Charivari' series, Les ouvriers de Paris.
	In style and arrangement Pruchet’s lithographic art has drawn comparison to such diverse practitioners as Honore Daumier, Cham and even Raffet. Perhaps Clement Pruchet’s best known lithograph dates from 1841, in which members of the jury appointed for designing the tomb of Napoleon are reduced to common objects that signify their dotage and uselessness.

	The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. Founded by the great writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), Le Charivari commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni and Travies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humour from this long past age.

Signed by Pruchet in the stone to the lower right corner, and containing the full title in French, the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger et Cie. R. du Croissant No. 16", "Chez Aubert, Pl. de la Bourse", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin. Containing faint foxing in the upper margin, else this is a fine ‘Sur Blanc’ impression and in very good condition throughout. "Si j’avais vingt cinq mille francs de rente!" represents a fine, original example of the art of Clement Pruchet and of the Golden Age of the French caricature.
