Samuel Prout: Undoubtedly, Samuel Prout
has been recognized as one of the greatest watercolour painters from the
golden age of this medium. Yet he was also an important early pioneer
in the medium of lithography, exploring this art's vast potential of light,
shade and texture. Born in Norfolk, Prout received his early art education
at the Plymouth Grammar School. He was first employed as a topographical
artist at the tender age of fourteen to sketch views of Cornwall. He continued
work in a similar vein for the following two decades, gaining a strong
reputation for his pencil, lithograph and watercolour views of Cambridgeshire,
Essex, Wiltshire and Devon, as well as many English rural views. |
|
After 1819, Samuel Prout became a frequent traveler on the Continent,
visiting and sketching Belgium, Flanders, Italy, Germany, the Rhine and
France. The lithographs he created from these excursions influenced artists
throughout Europe. Samuel Prout's masterful attention to atmosphere, detail and
the effects of light and shade were without parallel, and an entire generation
of artists after him tried in vain to emulate his art. |

Rudolph Ackermann (Germany, 1764 - London, 1834):
London's most famous early nineteenth century publisher of original prints
and illustrated books, Rudolph Ackermann founded his publishing empire
in 1796. By 1815 he was internationally praised for his detailed miniature
engravings which appeared in his Forget Me Not annuals, his superb architectural
studies and his landscapes and topographical views. His larger prints
were most often issued in sets or portfolios and for these he commissioned
some of the finest artists of the day, such as Samuel Prout and Thomas
Rowlandson. Ackermann's larger views were usually created in the mediums
of lithography, aquatint or soft ground etching. Some of his best known
sets of subjects and views are The Microcosm of London (1808),
History of the Abbey Church of St. Peter's, Westminster (1812),
The History of the University of Oxford (1814), The English
Dance of Death (1815) and The History of the Royal Residences
(1829). |

Illustrations of The Rhine: Samuel Prout worked on
his Illustrations of the Rhine from 1822 to 1826. Altogether, the
series, when completed contained twenty-eight lithographs, all drawn directly
on the stone by Prout himself. These were among the first lithographs
Prout made and with their wonderful combinations of landscape and architecture,
remain among his greatest and most sought after works. Each lithograph
was printed at the stated date of publication and was not reissued at
a later time. An original lithograph, Ehrenbreitstein (From the Bridge) was published by Rudolph Ackermann in London for "Illustrations of The Rhine". "Ehrenbreitstein is located opposite the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. In this original lithograph Samuel Prout portrays the ruins of the famous Prussian fortress (now mostly dismantled) on the rock 387 feet above the river. Accessible from only one side the fortification held a maximum garrison of 14,000 men and had room for stores and supplies to last an army of 60,000 for a year. The city of Coblentz is on the opposite shore. |
