Note: | Benoit Louis Prevost: An accomplished eighteenth century engraver, Benoit Louis Prevost studied fine art techniques under Jean Ouvrier, in Paris. Equally skilled in technical and artistic renderings, Prevost worked under such great painters and designers as Cochin and Moreau. He was also commissioned to engrave the portraits of such contemporaries as Voltaire, King Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Charles Nicolas Cochin and the Marquis de Marigny. |
Prevost was one of the chief engravers commissioned for the many illustrative plates comprising Diderot's Encyclopedie. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a liberal philosopher and social critic. His writings such as, Pensees Philosophiques and Lettre sur les Aveugles, drew the wrath of both church and state. He was in fact imprisoned for a period of one year in 1749.
The Encyclopedie was published in fourteen large volumes between 1751 and 1765. Containing many articles with large, illustrative engravings, it was the first work to systematically describe and depict the many processes and accomplishments of late eighteenth century life. This original engraving entitled, Gravure en Pierre Fines (Fine Stone Engraving) hails from this most important publication. Below is a detail of the upper portion of Benoit Louis Prevost's original engraving.
