Vojtech Preissig - Snow

Snow

Vojtech Preissig's "Snow" is an original aquatint engraving printed upon fine, hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in April of 1929 for the limited edition of one hundred impressions. It is signed in pencil by Preissig under the plate-mark. This engraving is a superb, original example of landscape art created by the Czech artist, Vojtech Preissig, one of Czechoslovakia's greatest masters of the early 20th century.

Title: Snow
Artist: Preissig, Vojtech (Svetec u Biliny, 1873 - Dachau, 1944)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Aquatint Engraving
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Vojtech Preissig: A major early twentieth century Czech artist, Vojtech Preissig studied in Prague at the School of Applied Industrial Art from 1892 to 1896. In 1897 he moved to Paris and worked for two years under the great Czech Art Nouveau master, Alphonse Mucha. It was at this time that Vojtech Preissig familiarized himself with printmaking techniques as well as with lettering and design. Vojtech Preissig returned to Prague in 1903 and shortly thereafter founded the periodical, Ceska grafika. For the next seven years his original prints, paintings and illustrations were widely exhibited in both Prague and Vienna. Vojtech Preissig's art from this early period contained strong elements of both Secessionism and Symbolism.
In 1910, Vojtech Preissig moved to New York where he gained a strong reputation as an innovator in the fields of printmaking, book design, typography and illustration. From 1912 to 1916 he taught at both the Art Students' League and at Columbia University and from 1916 to 1926 he directed the School of Printing and Graphic Arts, Wentworth Institute, Boston.
Around 1920, Vojtech Preissig began experimenting with more abstract forms of art, concentrating upon elements of geometrical ornamentation and optical effects. A master of all graphic mediums, Preissig's aquatints, mezzotints, linocuts and lithographs challenged the eye to study the most complex patterns behind the simplest of objects.
Vojtech Preissig returned to live in Czechoslovakia in 1930. Important one man exhibitions of his art were held in Prague in 1931, 1933 and 1934 and established him as one of the leading abstract artists of his country. During this decade he was outspoken in his opposition to the rise of the Nazis in Germany. After the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia, Vojtech Preissig was arrested in 1940 for his involvement in the resistance movement. Tragically, this great artist died four years later at the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany.
Since his death many retrospective exhibitions have been held on Vojtech Preissig's influential art. The government of Czechoslovakia has recently commemorated Vojtech Preissig by issuing stamps that feature his work in 1988, 1994 and 1998.
Edition: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as Vojtech Preissig, George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Ward, Winkler, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
Source: For the April, 1929 issue The Print Connoisseur published articles pertaining to the etchings of Albert Rosenthal, Robert Fulton Logan and Levon West. The most impressive article, however, was J. M. Bowles's, "The Prints of Vojtech Preissig". To accompany this article the publisher commissioned three original prints from Preissig: an aquatint entitled, Snow (which was used as the frontispiece), a mezzotint entitled, Manhattan (included with the article) and a three colour linocut entitled, The House (which was employed as the front cover design.) These three remarkable prints showcased Vojtech Preissig's great versatility and mastery of each graphic medium.
