William Henry Powis’s original wood engraving, "Nineveh", is of both historical and artistic interest. Ninevah was the ancient capital of the Assyrian Empire. Around 606 B.C. it was captured and burned by the Babylonians and Medians. It was locally held that it lay buried on the left bank of the Tigris River, opposite the city of Mosul. This was confirmed in 1841 when M. Botta began excavations of the many mounds in that area. William Powis's engraving was completed several years before the first efforts to unearth the remains of the ancient capital. Thus in "Ninevah" a solitary bird is juxtaposed with the haunting desolation engulfing it. |

Note: | William Henry Powis 'William Powis': The short lived William Henry Powis began his career as a wood engraver in London around 1830. He was best known for his Biblical illustrations and contributed wood engravings for such publications as "Illustrations of the Bible" (1833) and Scott’s "Bible" (1834). It is believed that too much labour affected his health and he died at the age of twenty-eight. "Ninevah", with its masterful atmospheric elements, is held to be his finest wood engraving. |
William Harvey: One of England’s most influential early wood engravers and designers for wood engraving, William Harvey was apprenticed at age fourteen to Thomas Bewick, the father of English wood engraving. Harvey quickly gained a privileged place among Bewick’s pupils and worked extensively with his master on the engravings for his famous, "Aesop’s Fables". William Harvey left Bewick in 1817 to study in London under B. R Haydon, but retained close contact with his former master until his death in 1828.
In 1824, William Harvey ceased engraving and began creating designs for others to either etch or engrave. Among his many works in this area are "Northcote’s Fables", "The Arabian Knights", Knight’s "Shakespeare" and Thomas Hood’s, "Eugene Aram".
