Note: |
Edward J. Portbury 'Edward Portbury': An English nineteenth century engraver of portraits, vignettes
and miniature subjects, Edward J. Portbury was active mostly from 1825
to 1850. During this period he was regularly commissioned by London publishers
for both individual plates and illustrated books. Most of Edward Portbury's
engravings are based upon the creations of contemporary British artists.
Such is the case with "Cherubs Gathering Flowers", which was designed by
Thomas Stothard. |
|
Thomas Stothard: The most distinguished illustrator
of the period, Thomas Stothard entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1777. There, he
attracted the notice of John Flaxman and several years later illustrated his first book.
Thomas Stothard was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1785 and a full Academician
in 1794. |
|
This impression of "Cherubs Gathering Flowers" bears the
word 'Proof' under the image. This indicates that it was one
of the first impressions struck from the plate and as such bears all the
fine lines and tones of an initial printing. |
|
Among Stothard's most famous illustrations are those
for "Robinson Crusoe" (1790), "Night Thoughts" (1802), Shakespeare's
Works (1802), Poems of Burns (1809), Cupid and Psyche (1820) and The Surprising
"Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (1826). Today his art is included in such
major collections as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery and
the Ashmolean. |
|
From 1828 to 1830, Thomas Stothard contributed designs to
such arts and literary annuals as "The Bijou" and "The Keepsake". Annuals such
as these sometimes printed a small number of proof impressions of their
steel engraved illustrations and published them on an individual basis.
Such is probably the case with Thomas Stothard's, "Cherubs Gathering
Flowers". |
