Max Pollak

Max Pollak - Isa Marsen

Isa Marsen (Early Movie Actress)

Max Pollak's original drypoint and etching printed in color, "Isa Marsen" is a fine, original example of his portrait art created around 1920. In the early 1920's, Max Pollak created a number of original drypoints and etchings portraying leading dancers and actresses of Austria and Germany. Such famous celebrities as Maria Ley, Kitty Starling and Isa Marsen posed for the artist. An actress, Isa Marsen, an early movie actress starred in such films as "Seine schwerste Rolle" (1919), "Seemannsbraut" (1919), "Narren der Liebe" (1921) and "Herzen im Sturm" (1921).

In total, Max Pollak created two full length portraits of Isa Marsen in the medium of the drypoint. In the other portrayal, the actress is depicted in formal dress. In this portrayal, the actress appears in an obviously more intimate and sensuous pose. The colors -- a dark green and a light rose-- were applied in separate printings. This original impression is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published around 1920. It is signed and titled by Max Pollak in pencil along the lower margin.

Title: Isa Marsen
Artist: Pollak, Max (Prague, 1886 - San Francisco, 1977)
Date: c. 1920
Medium: Original Drypoint and Etching Printed in Color
Note: Max Pollak: During the 1920's era, original printmaking in Austria was dominated by three talented artists, Luigi Kasimir, Hans Figura and Max Pollak. The first two artists made their international reputations upon their fine colour etchings and aquatints of city views and landscapes. Max Pollak was as adept in these genres as the other two artists, however, he was equally talented in the fields of portraits, figure studies, nudes and animal depictions. In these categories, Max Pollak used the drypoint medium to its finest advantage.
Born in Prague, Max Pollak studied art at the Vienna Academy under William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer. Max Pollak excelled in all printmaking techniques, particularly drypoint, soft-ground etching and aquatinting, and in 1910 he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his etched art. By 1920, Max Pollak had established a large reputation in France, Germany, Austria and the United States. In fact, Max Pollak immigrated to the United States in 1927 and eventually settled in San Francisco, California. During the following years the artist created many fine etchings and aquatints of America, Mexico and Central America.
Max Pollak was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Society of Etchers. Today his fine art is included in the permanent collections of such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the New York Public Library, the Oakland Museum, the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco and the British Museum, London. The Graphic Arts Collection of Princeton University lists an impression of "Isa Marsen" in its holdings.
