John Phillips's original etching "The Return from the Continent; Or, The Family Puzzled" is typical of John Phillips's fine satirical art from the Regency period. A family man is depicted taking his tea just after returning from a trip to Paris. Dressed entirely in the latest French fashions he is an object of absolute wonder to both his wife and daughter. This original John Phillips etching is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by Thomas McLean in 1835. |

Note: | John Phillips: Britain's late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries clearly mark the golden age of satirical art. Such masters as Thomas Rowlandson, Heath, Cruikshank, Gillray and a host of others raised the genre to its most glorious and often scandalous level by means of their popular, original etchings. |
A satirical English etcher of the early nineteenth century, John Phillips began working for the London publishers in 1825. By 1829 he was creating satires under the pseudonym of ‘A Sharpshooter’, and produced images similar to William Heath. He is best known for the four etchings he created in 1829 under the title of Characteristic Sketches of the London Clubs.
It is possible he might be the John Philips (spelt with one ‘L’ instead of two) who, from 1832 to 1838, contributed early illustrations to Punch.
In 1835 the London publisher, Thomas McLean, acquired a number of popular plates of George and Robert Cruikshank and several other artists and reprinted them with his address for a second and final edition which was titled, Cruikshankiana. This original etching hails from this edition.
The Return from the Continent is typical of John Phillips's fine satirical art from the Regency period. A family man is depicted taking his tea just after returning from a trip to Paris. Dressed entirely in the latest French fashions he is an object of absolute wonder to both his wife and daughter -- so much so that the tea is pouring all over the table! Only the ridiculously coiffeured dog at his side seems unimpressed.
