Matt Phillips' original linocut, "Studio Interior", was created by the American printmaker in 1975. This impression is printed upon blue, hand-made, laid paper as printed by Matt Phillips. "Studio Interior", is annotated 'A/P' (Artist Proof), signed and dated in pencil by the artist. "One's first and most superficial impression of Matt Phillips' art is that it is delightful in the conventional sense of the word: giving pleasure to the eye and the eye's mind; ...one associates with certain works of Debussy and Ravel and even Chopin, and in poetry, Wallace Stevens; exciting one's admiration through the very audacity of its ostensibly uncomplicated 'prettiness'" * |
Title: | Studio Interior |
Artist: | Phillips, Matt (New York City, Born, 1927) |
Date: | 1975 |
Medium: | Original Linocut |
Note: | Matt Phillips: A modern master of the monotype, linocut, lithograph and intaglio mediums, Matt Phillips received his M.A. in literature from the University of Chicago in 1952. Concurrent with his literary endeavors he studied art techniques at the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania. To conclude his education in the arts, Phillips travelled extensively in Europe and taught briefly in Paris. He returned to the United States in 1964 to teach printmaking techniques at Bard College, New York. He remained at this institution until his retirement in 1987. Matt Phillips currently lives and works in San Francisco. |
Matt Phillips' first published prints date from the mid 1950's . His first of many famous monotypes was created in 1959. In his truly unique art, Phillips has acknowledged the work of Matisse, Gauguin and Maurice Prendergast. In 1967 Phillips organized an important retrospective exhibition of the monotypes of Prendergast.
During the 1970's Phillips experimented considerably in the medium of the linocut. Many of these works were printed in very small numbers of artist proof impressions. It is likely that Studio Interior exists in only a handful of proofs.
Today the art of Matt Phillips is included in the following collections; the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. In 1999 the Department of Special Collections at Stanford University acquired the Matt Phillips collection of original prints and drawings.
