Modern Tourists

John Phillips's original etching, "Modern Tourists", takes satirical aim at the early 19th century British craze for all things Parisian. Within a decade of Napoleon's defeat Paris was seen as the last word in culture, fashion and fine dining.

"Modern Tourists" was first published in London in 1827. This original impression hails from the second and final edition published seven years later.

Note:	John Phillips: A satirical English etcher of the early nineteenth century, John Phillips began working for the London publishers in 1825. By 1829 he was creating satires under the pseudonym of ‘A Sharpshooter’, and produced images similar to William Heath. He is best known for the four etchings he created in 1829 under the title of "Characteristic Sketches of the London Clubs".
	It is possible he might be the John Phillips (spelt with one ‘L’ instead of two 'John Philips') who, from 1832 to 1838, contributed early illustrations to Punch.
	In 1835 the London publisher, Thomas McLean, acquired a number of popular plates of George and Robert Cruikshank and several other artists and reprinted them with his address for a second and final edition which was titled, "Cruikshankiana". This original etching hails from this edition.
	"Modern Tourists" actually depicts three individual scenes. To the left, a young girl sits on her father’s knee. He is poorly shaved and wears plain clothes. The girl takes his chin and says, "Lord, Papa! you must let us go to the Continent; Mrs Thingamary says we shall never be accomplished till we have seen Paris manners and customs". In the centre, two dandies are in conversation on the street: "Well, Charles, where are you off to? O! moy dear feller, to Paris - to Paris, moy dear feller; nothing like Paris - there you have the - the - the - Je ne scais quoi, moy dear feller, the - the every thing the every-thing!". To the right two fashionable ladies converse at a table: "Lord, ma’am! you are not serious, - you can never think of going to Margate - it is so common every tailor, shoemaker, and linendraper goes to Margate - No, no ma’am; Paris is the great resort of pure gentility, I assure you. - I always goes to Paris."
	The British Museum, London, includes an impression of "Modern Tourists" in its permanent collection. It may be viewed online under the registration number, 1935.0522.4.128.

Condition:	Printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and large, full margins as published by Thomas McLean in 1835. Containing one small, restored tear far removed from the actual plate-mark, else in very good condition throughout.
