Note: | Charles Philipon: Artist, caricaturist, writer and editor, Charles Philipon played a central role in the shaping of early nineteenth century French culture. Social and political satire in France was largely shaped by his efforts. Philipon founded and edited the two most influential journals of the century, La Caricature (1830-1835) and Le Charivari (1832-1916). Original lithographs accompanied the text with each issue. Philipon created some of these highly regarded masterworks of satirical art himself, such as the famous portrayal of King Louis-Philippe symbolically transformed into a pear. However this popular caricature was not well received by the King and Charles Philipon was rewarded with a several month stay in prison in 1835. |
As editor of La Caricature and Le Charivari Charles Philipon regularly commissioned and promoted such great artists as Travies, Grandville, Gavarni and Daumier. With Daumier he invented the famous villain, Robert Macaire. Daumier produced the imagery and Philipon suggested the scenes and wrote the captions.
Charles Philipon came to Paris from his native Lyons in 1823 and studied painting and lithography under Baron Gros. Shortly thereafter he produced his first caricatures. Politics, however, made Philipon explore other avenues of art. Beatrice Farwell writes,

During this period Charles Philipon created such series of lithographs as Genre parisien (1827-1829), Occupations d'une femme (1827-1830), Les Annonces, Petites-affiches parisiennes (1828-1830), Les tentations du diable (1829) and Costumes Divers (1830). This original lithograph originates from the last named series.
Costumes Divers was published in one edition only in 1830 and consisted of over thirty lithographs, all created by Charles Philipon. Drawing upon the costumes of various localities within Europe (with the emphasis upon the French provinces), these early Philipon lithographs represent a stunning artistic and historical representation of this genre. Each lithograph was hand-colored before publication. As one can see by this original example, no efforts were spared to create a superb range of tones and colors. This original lithograph entitled Riche Paysanne des Pyrenees Espagnoles thus represents a prime example of early nineteenth century French art.
