Louis Petit: A Parisian designer and engraver,
Louis Petit was a student of N. Ponce. In the late eighteenth and early
nineteenth centuries, he executed a number of fine, engravings,
such as this original engraving entitled, Poussez Ferme after
the works of contemporary French artists. |
|
Louis Leopold Boilly: In his early years,
Boilly was primarily a portrait painter. But by 1730, he had completed
a large number of works in all genres. Today, the artist is remembered most for his fine series
of caricatures. In 1833, Boilly received the coveted French Legion of
Honour. Many of his paintings ar in the permanent collection of the Louvre. |

Poussez Ferme comes at the end of a great 18th
century French tradition -- the 'Estampe Gallant' -- which romantically,
chronicled the pastimes of the nobility. This particular engraving details a young
woman in the act of a secret affair. The elderly husband or father, is
temporarily banned entrance so that the romantically inclined young man
can manage his escape. Altogether, a delightful scene. |
