Gabriel Perelle: An eminent French designer and engraver,
Gabriel Perelle received instructions in painting, etching and engraving
from Daniel Rabel. His first published etchings bear the date of 1635.
For the following thirty years Perelle created a large number of superbly
crafted etchings of landscapes and views. Gabriel Perelle's last etchings
date from around 1665. After that time he was commissioned by the King
of France to draw maps and military plans. |

Although he engraved designs after the work of other masters,
such as, Poussin, Paul Bril, Asselyn and Silvestre, most of Perelle's
graphic oeuvre (including this original example depicting a river view with
fountains) was both designed and engraved by his hand. And interestingly, even with his topographical views,
Gabriel Perelle frequently embellished his compositions with imaginary ruins and
other objects. Thus Perelle's etched views are also Utopian landscapes
of the mind. |

In much of his work, Gabriel Perelle was assisted by his
two sons, Adam (1638-1695) and Nicolas (1631-1695). As they were both
trained and tutored by their father it is impossible to differentiate
their work. Most of Perelle's etchings and engravings were published in
numbered sets of at least ten related prints. Two of Gabriel Perelle's
most famous series are entitled, Delices de Paris and Delices
de Versailles. Many of his sets were published by Europe's two most
influential publishing houses; Visscher, in Amsterdam, and Mariette, in
Paris. |

Printed upon 17th century hand-made, laid paper and with
margins trimmed to the image, as is usual with old master prints. Backed
onto a larger sheet of paper by a former owner which bears a Whatman watermark
and date: "J. Whatman 1872". Containing slight foxing and marginal staining,
else a finely printed, early impression and in good condition throughout.
This original 17th century etching and engraving represents a prime example
of the famous architectural and landscape art of Gabriel Perelle. |
