Note: |
Gordon Eastcott Payne 'Gordon Payne': As
a young boy living in the area of Niagara Falls, Gordon Eastcott Payne
first came in contact with art by watching his uncle, William St. Thomas
Smith (1862-1947), at work at his easel. Formal studies began at the
age of nineteen when Gordon Payne entered the Albright Art Gallery School,
in Buffalo. Next he studied at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto (1910-1914),
under George Reid, William Cruikshank and Robert Holmes. Upon graduation
World War One broke out and Gordon Payne spent the next four years as
a signals officer in the Canadian military. Gordon Eastcott Payne completed
his artistic education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in 1920. |
|
As an artist, Gordon Payne became known
throughout Canada for his landscape and still life paintings and watercolours.
As a graphic artist, Payne displayed the same qualities of serenity and
lyricism in his original linocuts and etchings. He was a full member
of the Art League of Toronto (1919), the Graphic Arts Society (1921),
the Ontario Society of Artists (1925) and the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers
and Engravers (1946). |
|
Gordon Payne was an influential teacher.
He was a regular instructor at the Doon School of Fine Arts (1946-1950)
and he operated Toronto's largest private school of art, the Payne
School of Fine Art, from 1946 to 1958. Today the art of Gordon Eastcott
Payne is included in the permanent collections of The Art Gallery of
Edmonton, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario,
Toronto. |
Edition: |
Gordon Payne did not number "Cyclamen"
in a specific edition. Judging from the complex, multiple colour printings,
however, it would be a surprise if more than ten impressions were made. |
