The Pauquet Brothers:
In the mid nineteenth century the Paris publishing house of Pauquet Freres (Pauquet Brothers)
created a number of fine costume portfolios containing original steel
or wood engravings. Modes Parisiennes: Regne de Louis XVI, 1787 is from their
greatest series of images entitled, Modes et Costumes Historiques.
(Fashions and Historical Costumes). The entire set was published in one
edition only, in 1864. Containing a total of ninety-six plates, each
hand-coloured engraving bears the title, name
of the original designer and the period of time within French history
along the lower margin. |
|
Each engraving was based upon a design of an artist of that period
-- in this case, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century master
engraver and painter, Philibert-Louis Debucourt (1755-1832). The plates
were all engraved by the Pauquet brothers (sometimes individually,
sometimes together) and the hand-colouring took place before publication.
The workmanship found in these engravings place them among the finest
costume plates of the nineteenth century. |
|
The elder brother, Hippolyte Louis Emile Pauquet Paris, 1797 - ?, exhibited
his paintings, engravings and lithographs at the Paris Salon from 1821
to 1849. After that period, he engraved for various publications in both
Paris and London. Hippolyte Pauquet produced wood engravings after the designs
of Henry Vizetelly for the Illustrated London News, and in Paris for
Le Magasin picturesque and L'Illustration. |
|
The younger brother, Polydor Jean Charles Pauquet Paris,
1800 - ?, worked almost entirely in collaboration with Hippolyte. Their
styles of draughtsmanship are so harmonious that individual attribution
is often difficult. This particular work, however, is signed in the plate
to the lower left with Polydor Pauquet's monogramme, "P'dor. Pauquet", which makes it the work
of Polydor. |
Note: |
Philibert-Louis Debucourt: A famous French painter
of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Philibert-Louis
Debucourt studied art in Paris, under Vien. Most of Debucourt's early
works were created in mezzotint, but around 1785 he began working in the
medium he will always be best remembered for -- the aquatint. Newly invented,
the aquatint medium appealed to Philibert-Louis Debucourt for its granular tones and hues.
He began experimenting with larger plates and with designs printed entirely
in colours. Thus one of the more important elements of Debucourt's aquatints
is that of innovation. |
|
Philibert-Louis Debucourt's influence spread to many genres. He was, as
one can see from Modes Parisiennes: Regne de Louis XVI, 1787, a gifted artist.
He was also one of the last great engravers of the 'Estampe Gallant'; those delightfully decadent French prints of
noble intrigues and affairs which were most popular before the French
Revolution. |
