Gen Paul (Eugene Paul, pseudonym, 'Paul Trelade'): A leading artist of the ‘Ecole de Montmartre’, Gen Paul was born there at 96 de la rue Lepic, which was a house painted by Vincent Van Gogh. He first worked as a furniture decorator and then enlisted in the French Army during World War One (1914-1918). He was severely wounded twice and on the second occasion lost his leg. Gen Paul then returned to Montmartre and formed a friendship with another artist who lived close by, Juan Gris (1887-1927). At about this time he was also introduced to printmaking techniques by Eugene Delatre. Apart from that, Gen Paul received no formal art training.
His first exhibited painting, a view of the Moulin de la Galette, was shown in Paris in 1916. |

Gen Paul’s paintings, aquatints and etchings of the early 1920’s are often compared to the art of such contemporary Parisians as Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955) and Maurice Vlaminck (1876-1958). After 1925, however, Gen Paul (Eugene Paul), began developing a unique form of expressionism that promoted a sense of motion through strong diagonals and clashing elements of abstraction and realism. Thus some art historians consider his work from this period to be a precursor of the 1950’s abstract expressionist movement. Of equal importance, his expressionism portrayed a joy of life and innovation and thus stood in opposition to the more despairing art of the twentieth century school of German expressionism and of such French expressionist contemporaries as Chaim Soutine and Georges Rouault |
|
Gen Paul was a regular exhibitor at Paris’s Salon d’automne and the Salon des independants from 1920 until his death. In 1934 the French government awarded him the Legion d’honneur and in 1937 he was commissioned to paint a large fresco in the Pavilion des vins de France for Paris’s International Exposition |
|
Gen Paul was a close friend of the novelist, Louis Ferdinand Celine (1894-1961) and of the composer, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974). During the 1930’s Celine requested Gen Paul to illustrate two of his most famous novels, Voyage au bout de la nuit (Journey to the End of the Night) and Mort a credit (Death on the Instalment Plan). Perhaps because of Darius Milhaud’s influence, Gen Paul (Eugene Paul), developed a strong interest in both contemporary classical music and jazz, and travelled to the United States to portray scenes of music and musicians there.
Today the fine art of Gen Paul will be found in many international collections. Within Europe his art will be found in public museums in Berne and Granville and in the Musee d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. |
