"While she continued painting as her primary medium, Terry Parmelee acknowledged
her motivation to print, once claiming 'I do not think I would have become
a printmaker if I had not met and studied with Carol Summers.' In fact,
it is Summers' technical and stylistic influences that are evidenced throughout
Parmelee's prints, particularly his staining and rubbing methods that require
the direct inking of the paper followed by saturating mineral solvent spray.
This innovation of the woodcut technique, which creates a unique and organic
impression, is a defining characteristic in many of Parmelee's prints from
the 1960's-80's. Among the best known of these prints are Ixtlan and Karthoum
commissioned by Sylvan Cole for the Associated American Artists. These
woodcuts demonstrate Parmelee's careful arrangement of geometric shapes
and application of color in order to transmit a unique expression that
explores the psychological effects of color combinations and symbolic meanings." *

A well known contemporary American painter and printmaker, Terry Parmelee
graduated in 1967 with an MA in Fine Arts from American University, Washington,
DC. Her first studies in the art of the woodcut took place in the late
1950's, under Un'Ichi Hiratsuka, in Tokyo. Her greatest inspiration in
this medium, however, began in 1966 with private studies under Carol Summers
(b. 1925). In the following ten years Parmelee developed a strong reputation
for her large color woodcuts both in Washington and throughout the country.
She also taught woodcut techniques at both Montgomery College (1969-1977)
and at the Corcoran School of Art (1972-1973). |
|
Recently Terry Parmelee has participated in such exhibitions as , The
Ukraine-American Graphic Arts Symposium (1995) and The National Museum
of Women in the Arts (1996). Her original woodcuts and paintings are included
in the following collections; The University of Delaware, IBM, the First
National Bank of Chicago, Smith, Kline Corporation, the Corcoran Gallery,
Georgetown University and the National Museum of Art, Washington, DC. |
|
From 1966 to 1999 Terry Parmelee created 122 original prints. In 2003
the book, Terry Parmelee Prints, 1966-1999: A Catalogue Raisonne (edited
by Patricia La Liberte), was published. Parmelee is a long standing member
and contributor to the Washington Print Club. |
|
Like all of Terry Parmelee's original woodcuts, Ixtlan was not only created
by the artist but hand-printed by her. At present the edition size for
Ixtlan is not known but her woodcuts from this period were usually published
in a limited edition of fifty impressions with five artist's proofs. |
