Note: |
William Papas 'Bill Papas': A major twentieth century watercolorist,
illustrator, printmaker and caricaturist, Bill Papas was born in South
Africa and served (at age fifteen) in that nation's air force during the
Second World War. At the war's end he traveled through Europe and studied
art periodically at the Beckenham School of Art, London, and the Cite Universitie,
Paris. Papas returned to South Africa in 1952 and began working as both
an artist and a reporter for the Cape Times and Johannesburg Star. His
work as a newspaper artist at the famous Nelson Mandela treason trials,
Pretoria, brought his art to international attention and, in 1959, he became
the political cartoonists for The Guardian, London. Bill Papas later became
a leading political cartoonist for The Sunday Times (1960-65) and Punch
Magazine (1966-71). At this period his art was syndicated in more than
100 newspapers throughout the world. |
|
Bill Papas's first illustrated book was published in 1952.
During the following years his art was frequently commissioned by major
publishers such as Oxford University Press and Collins. Some of his finely
illustrated books include, P. H. Nortje, The Green Alley (1963),
C. Downing, Tales of the Hodja (1964), R. Manning-Sanders, Damien
and the Dragon (1965), H. F. Brinsmead, Beat of the City (1968),
C. Downing, Armenian Folk Tales (1972), W. H. Nelson, The
Londoners (1975), Malcolm Muggeridge, In a Valley of this Restless
Mind (1978) and C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters (1979).
As well, Bill Papas authored and illustrated the following books; Under
the Tablecloth (1952), The Press (1964), No Mules (1967), A
Letter from India (1968), A Letter from Israel (1968), Taresh
the Tea Planter (1968) and People of Old Jerusalem (1980). |
|
During the last three decades of his life Bill Papas lived
and worked in such locations as Greece (1971-83), Jerusalem (1978-79),
Geneva (1983-84) and Portland, Oregon (1984-2000). A tireless traveler,
Papas's watercolors and prints of this period brilliantly delineate the
peoples and places of many lands. |

Both "Outside the Life Stock Market, Mercedes" and "Mexican Sheepsellers, Mercedes, Texas" were created by Bill Papas while traveling through the United States some time during the 1990's. The scene depicts two ranchers (Mexican Sheepsellers), at the market standing beside their old pickup loaded with their sheep. The watercolor on your upper left is a preparatory study for the finished etching and thus (when viewed together), they represent a marvelous example of Bill Papas's creative techniques. Interestingly, for the final print, he completely altered the secondary character as well as adding several more sheep, moving the red 'For Sale' sign, and depicting a dog and her puppies, along with some rabbits in a cage on the ground behind the old pickup. The original watercolor (to the left) is titled by Bill Papas and the original hand-coloured etching (to the right) is fully signed, titled and numbered by him and bears his 'P' blindstamp. Both are on exactly identical 'Rives' watermarked papers. Mercedes is a small city on the Texas/Mexico border located about 15 miles south-west of Harlingen, Texas. "Outside the Life Stock Market, Mercedes" & "Mexican Sheepsellers, Mercedes, Texas" are fine, original examples of the American art created by the twentieth century internationally known South African artist, Bill Papas. |
|
Today the art of Bill Papas is found in such collections
as the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Vorres Museum, Athens, and
the Old City Museum, Jerusalem. Recent retrospective exhibitions of his
art include 'Papas Retrospective', Boston (2003), 'The Guardian newspaper
of London Papas Retrospective' (2004) and the 'Papas Retrospective of Greek
and American Watercolors, Drawings and Cartoons", Hellenic-American
Institute, Athens (2004). In 2015, a major exhibition featuring original watercolors, acrylics and prints by Bill Papas was held at the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum Father Elias Stphanopoulos Center, in Portland, Oregon. |
