Jules Gailhabaud: The French architectural historian, Jules Gailhabaud, published
his magnum opus, Histoire de Architecture Ancienne et Moderne in Paris in 1850.
The English translation given is (History of Ancient and Modern Architecture). This
lengthy work examined major architectural structures
from the earliest discovered ruins to the modern era. Accompanying the
text were one hundred engraved plates which meticulously detailed the
structure and ornamentation of every building. Naturally, the scope was
wide reaching: starting with ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Sumeria,
India, China, Greece and Rome and ending with medieval and post medieval
constructions. Artists commissioned for the work included Vouchet, Prisse,
Jourdan and Leveil, while the leading engravers were Bury, Outhwaile,
Lemaitre and Pfnor. |
|
Few nineteenth century architectural engravings are as
highly esteemed as those from the Histoire de Architecture
Ancienne et Moderne. The plates dealing with ancient
architecture are of particular importance. In the space of almost one
hundred and fifty years since these original engravings were made, the
sites they depict have often suffered further deterioration and vandalism.
These engravings are thus both historically and artistically of great
value. |
