Motoi Oi's original embossed aquatint and etching printed in color entitled,"Chicks" dates from around 1965. It is printed upon hand-made, Arches paper and with full, deckled margins as published in New York in the limited edition of one hundred impressions. It is signed, titled and numbered by the artist in pencil. Chicks depicts a delightful scene of a little girl chasing chicks in the cabbage patch. It is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the Japanese / American painter and printmaker, Motoi Oi. |

Note: | Motoi Oi: A twentieth century painter and printmaker, Motoi Oi was trained in both Western and Eastern art techniques. He began his career in Japan primarily as a painter and was commissioned there to execute a number of murals. After the Second World War, Oi's art was exhibited in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and elsewhere in Japan. |
Motoi Oi moved to the United States in the latter 1950's. He began teaching art at Queen's College, New York City, in 1960, and at the Brooklyn Institute of Art & Science, in 1967. In 1963 Oi founded the Sumi-e Society of America, whose mandate is to foster and encourage an appreciation of Oriental brush painting. Since then, the Society has grown to include many branch chapters in both America and Canada. Motoi Oi's prints and paintings are now listed in numerous important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. | |
As an original printmaker, Motoi Oi is highly regarded for his complex printing techniques (including embossing), his striking use of colouration and for his visual representations of wonder and innocence. Chicks is typical of his brilliant etched art. It depicts a delightful scene of a little girl chasing chicks in the cabbage patch. | |

Signed, titled and numbered, '68/100' by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Some creasing in the upper right border of the paper, far from the plate-mark or image, else, a finely printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original color etching and embossing entitled, Chicks represents a prime example of the art of Motoi Oi. |
