John Ogborne & George Dance

John Ogborne and George Dance - Charles Pratt Earl Camden

Charles Pratt, Earl Camden

John Ogborne's portrait of Charles Pratt, Earl Camden is an original stipple engraving based upon a design by the British artist, George Dance. This impression is printed upon thick wove paper as published in London in 1794. It is inscribed "At Brighton, Sepr. 23rd, 1793" and signed, "Geo Dance" within the image. The engraver's name, "J. Ogborne", title, "Charles Pratt, Earl Camden" and publisher's details "Published as the Act directs, Novr. 1794. No. 29, Upper Gower Street" are printed below the image. This engraving depicts a half length portrait of Charles Pratt in profile to the left. The National Portrait Gallery, London, includes an impression of this engraving in its permanent collection. Charles Pratt (British, 1714 - 1794) was one of England's most prominent eighteenth century jurists. In 1761 he was appointed chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas. He became lord chancellor in 1766 but his constant opposition to England's policy of taxation of the American Colonies led to his dismissal in 1770. Pratt later served as president of the council under both the Marquess of Rockingham and William Pitt. In 1786 he was granted the title of Earl Camden.

Note: John Ogborne: During the late eighteenth century the technique known as stipple engraving was at the forefront of British graphic art. Briefly, a stipple engraving was created by employing a multitude of flicks or dots as opposed to lines, thus making it a more tonal composition. Francesco Bartolozzi (Florence, Italy, 1727 - Lisbon, Portugal, 1815), an Italian engraver, introduced the technique to England and taught most of Britain's greatest stipple engravers. John Ogborne was one of his finest students.
During his career John Ogborne engraved many fine plates in both colour and black and white after the contemporary designs of Westall, Kauffmann, Smirke and Stothard. John Ogborne also worked for John Boydell on his famous Shakespeare and Milton engravings. During the early nineteenth century he turned successfully to topographical views in the medium of aquatint engraving. In some of his engraved work he was assisted by his wife, Mary Ogborne.
John Ogborne was equally talented in historical and mythological scenes and in figure studies. Charles Pratt, Earl Camden is one of his most impressive portrait engravings. It is based upon a design created in 1793 by George Dance (British, 1741 - 1825). This impression is inscribed "At Brighton, Sepr. Both The National Portrait Gallery, London, and the National Library of Australia include an impression of this original engraving in their permanent collections.
