Fernando Odriozola: Among Brazil's most important
modernist painters, the art of Fernando Odriozola holds a high place.
Born in Spain, Odriozola served at a young age in the Spanish Civil War
and then assumed a post as a military official in North Africa. It was
at this time that he began to exhibit his art in various Spanish expositions
as well as the II Bienal Hispano-Americana. |
|
Fernando Odriozola moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1953. His
first one man exhibition took place there the following year at the Portinari
Gallery. Apart from producing individual paintings and drawings, he worked
extensively as an illustrator for the Diario de S. Pablo and the
magazine, Habitat. |
|
1964 marks an important year in the history of modern Brazilian
art. At this time the 'Austral' Group was formed. Austral was an extension
of the European 'Phases' movement and looked outwards to international
developments in contemporary art. Among the founding artists of Austral
were Fernando Odriozola, Wesley Duke Lee, Bin Kondo, Yo Yoshitome, Sara
Avila and Maria Carmen. Fernando Odriozola exhibited with Austral throughout Brazil
as well as in cities such as Tokyo and Chicago. |
|
Today the art of Fernando Odriozola is included in many
major collections both in Brazil and elsewhere. He is most famous for
his drawings and paintings upon either wood or paper, created in the 1960's
and 1970's. These complex works are forms of landscapes of the mind, charged
with both curious and provoking symbols. Both abstract and surreal his
art challenges our ways of seeing and thinking. It is with works of art,
such as this fine example, that secures Odriozola's place as a major contributor
to the art of twentieth century Brazil. |
