John Wright Oakes (J. W. Oakes)

John Wright Oakes - The Last Gleam of Day

The Last Gleam of Day

John Wright Oakes's original etching, The Last Gleam of Day displays many of the fine elements that made him one of England's great landscape artists. Of J. W. Oakes, E. R. Dibdin writes,"He had a passion for the scenery of mountainous country, and particularly loved North Wales, but he also chose subjects from Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, England, and occasionally the Continent. Extensive prospects pleased him better than 'bits', and he exhibited in his treatment of such themes a brilliant, almost unerring, sense of composition, a fine perception of light, atmosphere and colour, and the poetry of nature" *

* E. R. Dibdin in G. C. Williamson's, Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, London, Bell & Sons, 1926, Vol. IV, p. 31.

John Wright Oakes created only a handful of etchings, all for Junior Etching Club publications in the late 1850's and early 1860's. After examining this beautiful composition, charged with movement and brilliant contrasts of light and dark, one wishes there had been considerably more work in this medium. The Last Gleam of Day was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club for its 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets. In total the publication contained forty-seven etchings by member artists. Each etching was accompanied by one or several poems written by various authors. The adjoining poem for J. W. Oakes's original etching was, The Last Gleam of Day by Mrs. John Hunter.

The Last Gleam of Day is printed upon wove paper and with full margins and bears the artist's name, "J. W. Oakes" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It is a fine, original example of the 19th century landscape art created by the British artist, John Wright Oakes.

Note: John Wright Oakes 'J. W. Oakes': Apart from brief studies at the Liverpool Academy and the Mechanics Institute, John Wright Oakes was mainly self-taught, and in the following years proved himself to be a landscape artist of the first rank. He moved to Liverpool as a young man and initially supported himself as a house painter. He exhibited his first work of art at the Liverpool Academy in 1839. Nine years later J. W. Oakes showed his first of many paintings at the Royal Academy.
  Oakes's earliest work was mainly in the genre of still life, but in 1843 he turned almost exclusively to landscape. John Wright Oakes was elected an Associate of the Liverpool Academy in 1847 and served as Secretary from 1853 to 1855. He permanently moved to London in 1859 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1876. J. W. Oakes also was awarded Honorary membership to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1883.

  John Wright Oakes was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching as a leading art form in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Joseph Clark, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, William Gale, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. J. W. Oakes's The Last Gleam of Day was the nineteenth plate for this publication.

In total the publication contained forty-seven etchings by member artists. Each etching was accompanied by one or several poems written by various authors. The adjoining poem for J. W. Oakes's original etching was, The Last Gleam of Day by Mrs. John Hunter. The first part of the stanza of her poem is quoted below:

"The sun has sunk, his joyous course is o'er,
And Night creeps on the unwilling world once more;
Beneath the wave declined, but not to rest,
For distant nations greet their welcome guest;
There morning glows whilst here it is not night,
And round the wide world spreads the realm of light;
O'er all the sky his blushing beams are thrown,
The ocean smiles in glory not its own,
Heaven weeps in dews o'er all the joys he shed,
And light still lingers through the Sun be fled... * Mrs. John Hunter

  Mrs. John Hunter (British, 1742 - 1821): Mrs. John Hunter, nee Anne Home was an English Romantic Poet and Lyricist. Throughout her literary career, the author published her poems and lyrics as Mrs. John Hunter and Anne Home in a variety of journals, and magazines. A selection of her oeuvre is as follows; "Adieu ye Streams", published in The London Magazine, (1772), and in Scottish Songs, (1794). In 1876, a collection of Anne's compositions, as well as a brief biography of her life was recorded in, The Poets and Poetry of Scotland, from the Earliest to Present Time, written by James Grant Wilson, and published in London by Balckie & Son, Paternoster Buildings; Glasgow and Edinburgh. That volume included such works as "Bess the Gawki, "The Lot of Thousands", "The Ocean Grave", "Oh, Tuneful Voice!", "To My Daughter", "Adieu, Ye Streams" and others. According to Wilson, the author of the book in question, several of Mrs. Hunter's lyrics were incorporated into Francis Joseph Hayden's music. Anne's work was also published in two volumes, the first was "Poems" London, T. Payne (1802) & (1803). Anne's note to the reader of "Poems" said that the volume consisted of chiefly Odes, Ballads and Songs. The second volume, "The "Sports of the Genii", was published in London, T. Payne (1804). The Last Gleam of Day is a poem by Mrs. John Hunter published in, Passages from Modern English Poets.
  Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. John Wright Oakes's original etching, The Last Gleam of Day was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views.
