Jakob Nussbaum

Jakob Nussbaum - View in Palestine

View in Palestine

Jakob Nussbaum's "View in Palestine" is an original drypoint engraving created by the German/Israeli artist in 1925. In the winter of 1924/25 Jakob Nussbaum traveled in Palestine. When he returned to Frankfurt he created a portfolio of ten original drypoint engravings based upon drawings he made there. The completed set was entitled, "Palastina, 10 Radierungen von Jakob Nussbaum". The edition size for these important, early twentieth century drypoints is not known but as these works of art appear infrequently in printsellers’ and auction listings it is safe to assume that they were published in small numbers. This original impression is signed and dated with the artist’s ‘JN’ monogram in the plate to the lower left and signed in pencil by Jakob Nussbaum along the lower right margin. In his Palestinian drypoints Nussbaum concentrated upon scenes in and around such locations as Lake Kinneret, Tiberias and Jerusalem. "View in Palestine" thus may possibly be a depiction of the old city walls of Jerusalem, with the Jaffa Gate in the background.

Title: View in Palestine
Artist: Nussbaum, Jakob (Rhina (Germany), 1873 - Afula (Israel), 1936)
Date: 1925
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Series: Palastina, 10 Radierungen von Jakob Nussbaum (“Palestine, 10 Etchings by Jakob Nussbaum”)
Note: Jakob Nussbaum: An important early twentieth century German painter and printmaker, Jakob Nussbaum moved with his family at an early age to Frankfurt on Main. This city was to be his home for most of his life until the Nazi government forced him to flee to Palestine in 1933. Jakob Nussbaum began his formal studies in 1893 at the Academy of Arts in Munich, under Hacke. His primary influence there, however, was the Hungarian artist, Simon Hollosy. In 1896 Hollosy founded an artist colony in the Transylvanian village of Nagybanya. The colony based much of its work upon the earlier art of the French Barbizon school and Jakob Nussbaum spent a number of summers there.
In Frankfurt, Nussbaum was appointed chairman of the Frankfurt Artists’ Association and, in 1922, he founded the Frankfurter Kunstlerhilfe. Jakob Nussbaum became a full professor at the city’s Stadelschule in 1926. He remained at this post until 1933 when the newly formed Nazi government dismissed him for being Jewish. Like many other great German artists of the decade Jakob Nussbaum sought safety outside the borders of his native country. The same year he emigrated with his family to Palestine and settled in the vicinity of Lake Kinneret.
In his fine paintings, watercolors, lithographs and drypoints Jakob Nussbaum has often been viewed as an ‘Impressionist’. Max Liebermann (1847-1935) was a lifelong friend and these two great artists sometimes worked together. Today the art of Jakob Nussbaum is included in such collections as Frankfurt’s Stadelsches Kunstinstitut and the Judische Museum, Frankfurt.
