Carl Johan David Nordell, 'Carl Nordell':
Born in Denmark, Carl Johan David Nordell emigrated to the United States
at about the age of ten. He first studied art techniques at the Rhode Island
School of Design, graduating in 1905. Further studies led Nordell to New
York's Art Students League and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
In 1909 Carl Nordell was awarded the Paige Scholarship which enabled him
to study for two years in Europe, particularly at the Academie Julian in
Paris. |

Carl Johan Nordell returned to Boston in 1911 and began exhibiting
his art at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design,
and elsewhere. In 1912 he was awarded the Clarke Prize from the Corcoran
Gallery and, in 1915, a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International
Exposition. In 1917 Nordell received the first prize at the Swedish-American
Exhibition in Chicago. |

In 1927 Nordell moved from Boston to Long Island and lived
and worked in the Oakdale Artists Colony. Four years later he accepted
a teaching position at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota,
Florida. Carl Nordell moved to California in 1947. |

Carl Nordell began experimenting with etching around 1920.
In 1923 one of his fine prints was awarded the Salmagundi Club Shaw Prize. |

Carl J. Nordell was a full member of the North Shore Arts
Association, Art Students League of New York, Boston Art Club, Salmagundi
Club, Print Makers' Society of California, Brooklyn Society of Etchers
and Allied Artists of America. Today his art will be found in the collections
of the New York Public Library, Cleveland Museum of Art, the Smithsonian
Institution, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale,
Paris. |

This orignal Carl Nordell etching and drypoint engraving entitled,
Gloucester Fisherman hails from the estate of LeRoy Latham (1874-1938)
and thence to his heirs. LeRoy Latham was Chairman of Latham
Lithographing Company (Latham Litho & Printing Co.). Situated in Brooklyn,
New York, it was one of America's largest lithographic printing establishments
in the early twentieth century. His large print collection consisted of
many examples of French and British nineteenth century lithographs as well
as contemporary American lithographs, etchings and wood engravings. |

Printed upon hand made, laid paper and with full margins
as published in 1926. Containing very faint overall light toning within
the image, else a strongly printed impression with full drypoint burr and
in very good condition throughout. Signed and titled under the plate-mark
in pencil. Gloucester Fishermen represents a fine, original example of
the etched art of Carl J. Nordell. |
