James Craig Nicoll's "Building an Elevator" is an original etching with plate tone printed upon fine nineteenth century laid paper and with full margins as printed by G. W. H. Ritchie in New York. It is signed and dated by the artist in the plate to the lower left. "Building an Elevator" is a fine, original example of the 19th century marine art created by this American artist. As one can see, atmospheric effects, most particularly those of reflected light and shade, are paramount in James Craig Nicoll's art.

Note: James Craig Nicoll: A prominent nineteenth century American marine painter and etcher, James Craig Nicoll both studied under and worked with Maurice F. H. de Haas. James Craig Nicoll first exhibited his art at the prestigious National Academy of Design in 1868. He was later elected an associate there in 1880 and a full academician in 1885. J. C. Nicoll served as a founding member of the American Watercolor Society, secretary of the New York Etching Club and president of the Artists’ Fund Society (1887). His fine art was awarded the gold medal at the 1885 New Orleans Exposition. Today the marine paintings and etchings of James Craig Nicoll are held in many major public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
  As one can see in "Building an Elevator", atmospheric effects, most particularly those of reflected light and shade, are paramount in James Craig Nicoll's art. Many of his fine etchings bear similarities to Impressionist concerns.
  In 1883 the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute, Boston, held a major exhibition of contemporary American art. Concentrating largely upon American drawings and etchings the exhibition catalogue listed 731 works of original art. James Craig Nicoll's original etching, "Building an Elevator", was included in this exhibition and bears the catalogue number, 488. *
