Bertauts" along the lower margin as published in Paris for "Les Beaux-Arts", Illustration, des Arts et de la Litterature, Troisieme Volume, Paris, L. Curmer (Leon Curmer), Libraire de S. M. la Reine et de S. A. R. M de La Duchesse D'Orleans, 49, Rue de Richelieu, M DCCC XLIV (1844). With its fine graduations of light and shade and strong tonal values, it remains one of the artist's most memorable scenes. Landscapes and genre depictions were among Mouilleron's greatest strengths in both his paintings and lithographs. This scene depicts a little girl making her way towards the cottage in order to escape the storm. It is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Adolphe Mouilleron. The Yale University Art Gallery lists an impression of L'Orage in its permanent collection. Note: | Adolphe Mouilleron: Born and raised in Paris, Adolphe Mouilleron began exhibiting there at the Salon in 1846. Highly regarded for both his paintings and original lithographs, Mouilleron was awarded medals for his art from the Paris Salon in 1849, 1852 and 1855. He was appointed to the Legion d'honneur in 1852. In 1856 Adolphe Mouilleron moved to Amsterdam and worked in that city for several years. Examples of Alolphe Mouilleron's art can be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Rijks Museum, Holland, The British Museum, London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and other important private and public collections. The Yale University Art Gallery lists an impression of "L'Orage" in its permanent collection, Accession Number: 1980.43.60. |
A large part of Mouilleron's artistic work dealt with creating lithographs after the designs of such contemporary artists as Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier, Robert Fleury, Bonington, Chasseriau, Diaz, Dupre, Decamps and others. He did, however, create a number of fine, original compositions based upon his own designs. "L'Orage" is a superb example of his individual, artistic talents. | |

Henri-Leon Curmer (Paris, 1801-1870): A member of the 'Societe des gens de lettres' and an important publisher of original graphic art and fine, illustrated books, Leon Curmer also listed as Henri-Leon Curmer, & L. Curmer began his publishing house in 1833 and for the next three and a half decades produced some of the greatest illustrated books of the era. These include, "Histoire de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament" (1835), "Paul et Virginie" (1838), "Les Francais peints par eux-memes" (1842), "L'Imitation de Jesus-Christ" (1857), "Le livre d'heures de la reine Anne de Bretagne" (1861) ,"L'oeuvre de Jean Fouquet" (1867) and other important literature from that period.. Leon Curmer became most famous for his complex application of chromolithography (colour lithography) to reproduce medieval illuminations and manuscripts. He was also one of the first publishers to introduce colour photography. | |
L. Curmer was the publisher/editor of the art journal "Les Beaux-Arts", "L'Orage" hails from this source. This lithograph can be found listed in the table of contents, Les Beaux-Arts,1844, Illustrations, Page 216, Quatre-Vingt-Deuxieme Livraison, L'Orage, par M. Mouilleron. The lithograph appeared in the art journal between pages 192-193. Bertauts, Publishing & Printing Firm (c. 1830's - c. 1970's): The renowned French lithographic publisher and printer, Bertauts was considered one of the finest printers in Europe during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the Beaus-Arts – de la Lithographie et des Imprimeurs, Bertauts began printing lithographs after 1826 and established his lithographic firm in 1836. During the 1830's and into the 1870's, original lithographs printed by Bertauts appeared in such publications as, "L'Artiste, Paris" (1831-1904), "Album du Salon" (1839-1844), "Les Beaux-Arts" (1843-1844), "Les Artistes Contemporains", (1845 - 1853), "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes, Paris" (1850 - 1862), "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" (1858), the "Gazette des beaux arts" (1859-1939), "Souvenirs d' Artistes" (1860-1876), and other major 19th century art journals of the time.
