Tachibana Morikuni

Tachibana Morikuni - Water Buffalo from the Unpitsu soga Moving Brush in Rough or Rapid Painting

Water Buffalo from the Unpitsu soga (Moving Brush in Rough or Rapid Painting)

Tachibana Morikuni's original woodcut, "Water Buffalo" is printed on 18th century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published in the Unpitsu soga (Moving Brush in Rough or Rapid Painting) by Nishimura Genroku in 1749. Designed in the academic Kano style, this woodcut is a very early example of producing graduated tones and lines by scraping the blocks in order to simulate the effects of actual brushwork. It depicts a water buffalo (ox), crossing the river. It is a fine, original example of the animal art created by illustrator and writer, Tachibana Morikuni.

Title: Water Buffalo
Artist: Morikuni, Tachibana (Osaka, 1679-1748)
Date: 1749
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut On Two Adjoining Panels
Publisher: Nishimura Genroku
Source: Unpitsu soga (Moving Brush in Rough or Rapid Painting)
Note: Tachibana Morikuni: A leading eighteenth century painter, illustrator and writer, Tachibana Morikuni was a master of both Kano and Tosa styles. A student of Tsuruzawa Tanzan, Morikuni lived and worked in Osaka. His major illustrated books include, Ehon Koji-dan (1714), Morokoshi Kimmo-zui (1719), Ehon shaho-bukuro (1720), Gaten tsuko (1727), Honcho gaen (1729), Utai gashi (1732), Ehon oshukubai (1740) and Unpitsu soga (1749). Water Buffalo originates from the last named volume.
Unpitsu soga, a three volume set, was actually published a year after Tachibana Morikuni's death. Unpitsu soga (translated as, 'the Moving Brush in Rough or Rapid Painting'), dealt mostly with studies of animals, birds and flowers. Designed in the academic Kano style, these woodcuts are very early examples of producing graduated tones and lines by scraping the blocks in order to simulate the effects of actual brushwork. This technique is clearly seen in this beautiful woodcut of a water buffalo. Tachibana Morikuni's "Water Buffalo" hails from volume three published by Nishimura Genroku for the Unpitsu soga.
This original Tachibana Morikuni woodcut depicts a water buffalo crossing the river. The water buffalo (ox), is believed to play an important role in China, Japan and in other parts of the world. For example, it is not surprising that amulets of a water buffalo, with an image of Daikoku, the (God of Wealth), between its horns, are believed to bring good luck to merchants, as in old Japan, rice farming produced the wealth of the country. Daikoku was one of the traditional seven gods of 'Luck or Good Fortune', usually portrayed carrying a large sack of rice on his back. It is well known that oxen contribute to the welfare of man by drawing the ploughs that cultivate the fields, thus this beast of burden is also considered an emblem of spring and agriculture. The famous illustrated series of short poems used in the Zen (Chan) Buddhism tradition, Ten Ox Herding Pictures, reveal the various stages of progress and the purification of the spirit of the disciple. It is suggested that the sixth illustration in this series portraying the young man riding away on an ox while playing his flute represents the symbol of peace and enlightenment, now free of fear and anxiety, he can now express his creative energy of life.
