Note: | Thomas Moran: Now considered the greatest master of the American etching revival, Thomas Moran immigrated with his family to Maryland at the age of seven. He was apprenticed to the Philadelphia wood engraving firm of Scattergood and Telfer, working there from 1853 to 1855. During this time he taught himself to paint in both water colors and oils. |
In 1862 Thomas Moran went to England in the company of his brother, Edward Moran, a marine painter. There they studied the art of such masters as J. M. W. Turner and Claude Lorrain. Turner, in particular, had a long lasting effect on Moran’s art. Thomas Moran settled permanently in New York in 1872 and spent his summers at his country home in East Hampton, Long Island. A number of his original etchings depict scenes close to this home.
The art of Thomas Moran first received widespread attention as a result of his 1871 trip to the Yellowstone region with the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His spectacular art from this expedition was exhibited in Washington DC and directly influenced Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park. Moran made a further trip to the territory of Wyoming in 1879. One of Wyoming’s greatest landmarks, Mount Moran, is named after him.
Thomas Moran was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1884. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Artists’ Fund Society, the American Water Color Society, the New York Etching Club and the Society of American Etchers. His paintings and etchings are housed in most major American museums. This original wood engraving was published by the Aldine Company, New York for the 19th century periodical, The Aldine, The Art Journal of America.
The Aldine, New York: The leading American publishing and printing firm of Sutton, Bowne & Co., Liberty St., New York first published The Aldine in 1868. It was published by the firm of Sutton, Bowne & Co. from (1868 to 1870), as The Aldine Press; A Typographic Art Journal, New York. Then, from (1871 to 1873), this periodical became The Aldine, A Typographic Art Journal. And finally, in 1874, the Journal was published as The Aldine, The Art Journal of America until its last issue in December of 1879. From (1870-1873) , its publisher was James Sutton & Company, and in 1874, the journal was published by the Aldine Company (with James Sutton as the president). During the second half of the nineteenth century, periodicals such as Every Saturday, The Aldine and Harper's, in the United States, and the Illustrated London News and The Graphic, in England, created pictorial journalism on a grand scale. Wood engraving (invented around 1780) at last made it possible for publishers to print images and words on the same page without the extravagant costs of producing etchings or engravings from metal plates. From about 1850 engraving upon wood became the dominant means of distributing information along with pictorial imagery, and continued in this role until around 1900, when the practical application of photography took control. The Aldine, commissioned works by Thomas Moran, Eliza Pratt Greatorex, John Augustus How, William Ludwell Sheppard, Alexander Lawrie, Kruseman van Elten, and other important artists of the 19th century to create works for their monthly arts periodicals from the 1870's. A Storm in the Mountains is a fine, original example of Thomas Moran's work in this field. This original wood engraving was published by the Aldine Company, New York for The Aldine, The Art Journal of America in 1875. The scene depicts a lush forest landscape with a deer running in the path.
