Thomas Moran - A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky

A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky Proclaim it a Hunting Morning

Thomas Moran - "A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky Proclaim it a Hunting Morning" - Original Etching: In 1883 the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute, Boston, held a major exhibition of contemporary American art. Concentrating largely upon American drawings and etchings the exhibition catalogue listed 731 works of original art. Thomas Moran's fine landscape etching, "A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky Proclaim it a Hunting Morning", was first exhibited at this exhibition and bears the catalogue number, 477.

This original etching is printed upon fine hand made, laid paper and with full margins as published around 1882. It is signed with Thomas Moran's distinctive monogram in the lower left corner of the plate. "A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky ..." is a scarce and superb original example of the nineteenth century American art of Thomas Moran.

Title: A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky Proclaim it a Hunting Morning
Artist: Moran, Thomas (Bolton, England, 1837 - Santa Barbara, CA, 1926)
Date: c. 1882
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Thomas Moran: Now considered the greatest master of the American etching revival, Thomas Moran immigrated with his family to Maryland at the age of seven. He was apprenticed to the Philadelphia wood engraving firm of Scattergood and Telfer, working there from 1853 to 1855. During this time he taught himself to paint in both water colors and oils.
In 1862 Thomas Moran went to England in the company of his brother, Edward Moran, a marine painter. There they studied the art of such masters as J. M. W. Turner and Claude Lorrain. Turner, in particular, had a long lasting effect on Moran's art. Thomas Moran settled permanently in New York in 1872 and spent his summers at his country home in East Hampton, Long Island. A number of his original etchings depict scenes close to this home.
The art of Thomas Moran first received widespread attention as a result of his 1871 trip to the Yellowstone region with the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His spectacular art from this expedition was exhibited in Washington DC and directly influenced Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park. Moran made a further trip to the territory of Wyoming in 1879. One of Wyoming’s greatest landmarks, Mount Moran, is named after him.
Thomas Moran was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1884. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Artists’ Fund Society, the American Water Color Society, the New York Etching Club and the Society of American Etchers. His paintings and etchings are housed in most major American museums.
Thomas Moran made his first original etching in 1856. He took up etching again in 1878 and during the following decade produced almost one hundred valuable works of art in this medium. This beautiful landscape etching entitled, "A Southerly Wind and a Cloudy Sky Proclaim it a Hunting Morning", was first exhibited in 1883. It appears to be a very scarce work of art as I have found only one other original impression, that being at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (catalogue #1973.122.72).
