Janet Moore:
A twentieth century American artist, arts teacher, author and curator,
Janet Moore graduated from Vassar College before enrolling in graduate
studies in the fine arts at Columbia University. She then travelled to
and studied art techniques in France, Italy and China. Returning to New
York, Janet Moore completed her formal education at the Art Students League
under George Grosz. |
|
Janet Moore first taught art at Miss Hewitt's School, New
York and then at the Laurel School, Shaker Heights, Ohio (1947-1961). She
then began a fifteen years association with the Cleveland Museum of Art,
serving both as an associate curator (1967-1972) and as curator of the
department of art history and education. During this time Moore also served
as adjunct assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University and was
invited by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to participate on a national
committee on art education. In 1974 Moore received the Special Citation
for Distinguished Service to the Arts from the city of Cleveland. |
|
Janet Moore gained an international recognition with the
publication of her two books, The Many Ways of Seeing: An Introduction
to the Pleasures of Art (1968) and The Eastern Gate: An Introduction
to the Arts of China and Japan (1979). In the former book Moore stressed the
importance of looking at and experiencing nature as a "counterbalance
to our mass-produced culture." |
|
As an artist Janet Moore was best known for her work in watercolors,
pastels and pen and ink. Her pen and ink compositions, in particular, bear
affinities to the traditions of Chinese and Japanese landscape compositions.
Moore visited both countries frequently. In 1948 Janet Moore was awarded
first prize at the annual May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art. |
|
Janet Moore retired to her cottage near Stonington, Maine
in 1975. There she joined the Deer Isle Artists' Association and served
as its secretary. |
