Augustin Mongin's original etching, "The Highwaymen's Farewell" (Richard Turpin, The Highwayman) is based upon a design created by the British artist, Henry Gillard Glindoni 'Henry Glindon'. It is a 'Remarque Proofs' impression printed upon 19th century wove paper. It is signed "H. G. Glindoni", in pencil and in the plate by Henry Gillard Glindoni and containing the 'Remarque' to the right of his signature. This etching is also signed "A. Mongin", in pencil, and in the plate by Augustin Mongin. In this scene, the artist depicts a couple walking away, leaving their carriage behind on the isolated road as two highwaymen bow to them while they pass. The Highwaymen's Farewell is a striking, original example of both the art of Henry Gillard Glindoni and the etching talents by the 19th century French artist, Augustin Mongin |

Henry Gillard Glindoni 'Henry Glindon': A British painter of historical and genre scenes, Henry Glindoni started his career as both a scene-painter for the theatre and as a porcelain painter. He then began to study art at the Working Mens' College and at the Castle Street School of Art. The Nineteenth Century Remarque Proof Impression: In the late 19th century American, French and British publishers of large engravings and etchings would produce a small number of remarque proofs before publication of the regular edition. 'Remarque' refers to the small etching (in this case the several objects) found under the main image in the lower margin. The 'Remarque' was meant to compliment the composition, and was removed for the publication of the regular edition. 'Proofs' were the first impressions to be pulled from the plate and before the addition of the title along the lower margin. Proofs thus constitute the finest impressions. As well, in the Victorian era, Remarque Proofs were the only impressions which were hand-signed by the artists. "The Highwaymen's Farewell" (Richard Turpin, The Highwayman) is an original 'Remarque Proofs' impression signed "H. G. Glindoni", in pencil and in the plate by Henry Gillard Glindoni and containing the 'Remarque' to the right of his signature. The etching is also signed "A. Mongin", in pencil, and in the plate by Augustin Mongin. It is based upon a design created by the British artist, Henry Gillard Glindoni 'Henry Glindon'. In this scene, the artist depicts a couple walking away, leaving their carriage behind on the isolated road while two highwaymen bow to them as they pass. | |
