This
collection of six original unsigned drawings and their carbon transfer prints
represents an important examination of Alexander Minewski's
artistic techniques. Bound within an artist drawing book each page
measures 9 X 11 1/2 inches. Before each graphite drawing the
artist positioned a sheet of carbon paper underneath, resulting in
an individual print on the following page. Alex Minewski then transformed
these prints into unique works of art by scraping away at the carbon
with usually short horizontal or vertical lines. He thus experimented
with and altered these prints into fragmented abstractions derived
from the original drawings. The drawings and their subsequent prints
may be titled;
1) Tree Trunks
2) Table and Chairs
3) Fallen Figure
4) Machine Abstraction
5) Abstracted Street Scene
6) Seagulls
Glued inside the front cover is an exhibition catalogue entitled,
"Alex Minewski: 20 Years of Drawings". The exhibition took place at the
Washington Irving Gallery, New York City, October, 1959. The catalogue is illustrated with six black and
white illustrations of Minewski's graphite and pen and ink drawings.
The text was written by the American artist, Ernest Fiene (1894-1965) and a
short biography was assembled by the gallery director, Bernhardt Crystal. It is unknown
whether this bound collection was included in the exhibition, or was created
shortly thereafter. The fact that Alex Minewski included this catalogue with this
collection, however, indicates that these six drawings and six prints were
created around this time.
Alexander Minewski 'Alex Minewski' (Detroit, 1917 - Kingston, New York, 1979)
Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski's first aspiration was not to be an
artist but a circus ringmaster. At the age of fourteen he left home to work in
the circus, setting up and taking down equipment. He then worked at such diverse
jobs as logging and sign painting. At this time, however, he was constantly drawing
and sketching. Several years later he received a scholarship to study at the
Art Students League, New York (1939-1942). There he studied under such famous
artists Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, Vaclav Vylacil and George Grosz.
When America entered the Second World War Alex Minewski enrolled in the
army and fought as a combat engineer. He later joined Merrill's Marauders in
Burma. He spent two years there in a hospital recovering from wounds. After his
release Minewski went to Paris to study art for two years on a GI Bill. He then
returned to New York City and completed his studies under the famous abstractionist,
Hans Hofmann. After this, Minewski's art moved more towards elements of
both abstraction and expressionism.
In 1954, Alexander Minewski made his first visit to Monhegan Island in Maine.
The island was home to a major artist colony and Minewski spent considerable
time working there during the following decades. He was also appointed Professor
of Art at State University of New York at New Paltz.
During his career, Alexander Minewski received such awards as the Purchase
Prize (1939), the Tiffany Fellowship (1960) and honorable mention from the American
Society of Casein Painters (1964). Today his fine art is included in such
public collections as State University of New York, New Paltz, and the Detroit Institute of Art.
