Sir John Everett Millais

Sir John Everett Millais - Summer Indolence

Summer Indolence

Sir John Everett MIllais's original etching, Summer Indolence was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club in 1861 and published the following year in the portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets. The etching was meant to serve as a general, visual theme or illustration for three poems - "Love in Idleness", by Laman Blanchard, "Summer Idleness", by Jeremiah Holmes Wiffen, and "Indolence", by an unknown author. The first stanza of the latter poem is quoted below:

"Indolent! Indolent! - Yes , I am indolent:
So is the grass growing tenderly, slowly, -
So is the violet fragrant and lowly,
Drinking in quietness, peace, and content;-
So is the bird on the light branches swinging,
Idly his carol of gratitude singing,
Only on living and loving intent."

This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published by Day & Son in 1862. The artist's name 'J. E. Millais' is printed in the lower right margin under the image. Summer Indolence is a superb, original example of the famous art created by the 19th century British artist, Sir John Everett Millais.

Title: Summer Indolence
Artist: Millais, John Everett (Southampton, 1829 - London, 1896)
Date: 1861
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Day & Son, London
Edition: Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club, 1862
Note: Sir John Everett Millais: A major Victorian era painter and illustrator, Sir John Everett Millais began his formal art studies in London at the age of nine. His artistic gifts were so obvious that two years later he entered the Royal Academy Schools. J. E. Millais exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy in 1846, at the age of sixteen.
  Millais was both an early and instant success, but he tired of the vogue for the uninspiring history and genre paintings of the era and, in 1848, joined Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti to form arguably the most influential British art movement of the nineteenth century -- the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
  Beginning around 1850, J. E. Millais devoted considerable energy to illustrating both books and weekly journals with his black and white line drawings. The latter 1850's and the decade of the 1860's marked the golden age of the British wood engraved book and Millais contributed illustrations to such classics as The Music Master (1855), Moxon's Tennyson (1857), Lays of the Holy Land (1858), Puck on Pegasus (1862), Parables of our Lord (1863), Touches of Nature by Eminent Artists (1866) and Gems of Poetry (1867). He was also the illustrator of five Anthony Trollope novels, dating from 1860 to 1882.
  John Everett Millais was a member of both the Old Etching Club (1838-1885) and the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864). He became a member of the Junior Etching Club in 1858 and in total contributed three etchings to this association, one of course being Summer Indolence. Other members of the Junior Etching Club included James McNeill Whistler, John Tenniel, Walter Severn, M. J. Lawless, Henry Moore and John Wright Oakes.
  Millais was not a prolific etcher. In total he created only eleven plates, the first made in 1850 and the final etching bearing the date of 1878. One regrets that he contributed so little to this demanding medium, but given his lifelong success as a leading painter and illustrator it is not surprising.
  Sir John Everett Millais was elected to the Royal Academy in 1863, created a Baronet in 1885, and was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1896. Institutions that house impressions of Summer Indolence include the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, Liverpool University Library, The Art Institute of Chicago and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The first stanza of the poem "Love in Idleness", by Laman Blanchard is quoted below:

"SOOTH 'twere a pleasant life to lead,
With nothing in the world to do,
But just to blow a shepherd's reed
The silent seasons through;
And just to drive a flock to feed,--
Sheep, quiet, fond, and few. * Laman Blanchard

The first part of the stanza of the poem "Summer Idleness", by Jeremiah Holmes Wiffen is quoted below:

On my hot brow diffuse, delicious breeze,
The coolness of thy breath, whilst here I lie
In the fresh shadow of the flickering trees,
Gloom on the grass, but glory in the sky;
And mix with idlesse a calm dignity
Which finds a moral in the slightest thing--... *Jeremiah Holmes
