France Mihelic's original lithograph, Kurenti is a fine example of the art created by the Slovenian artist. The Kurent is a demonic, Shrovetide being that chases away winter and heralds the beginnings of spring. In Mihelic's art the Kurent is metamorphosed and abstracted into universal symbols of life and death. Kurenti is printed upon fine hand-made paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published in an edition of only fifty impressions between 1955 and 1965. This original lithograph is signed, titled and numbered by France Mihelic in pencil along the lower margin. |

Note: | France Mihelic: In 1953 the first post-war exhibition of Slovene art opened at the Moderna Gallery in Ljubljana. Abstraction and other modernist currents were extensively featured for the first time. One of Slovenia's most influential modernist painters and printmakers was France Mihelic. |
France Mihelic studied art at the Academy in Zagreb. In 1936 he accepted a position of teacher of drawing at a school in the city of Ptuj, Slovenia, and remained there for the following five years. After the end of the Second World War (1945) Mihelic emerged as one of the country's leading artists. His art, particularly his prints, were widely exhibited in major exhibitions in Zagreb, Paris, Rome and elsewhere.
Mihelic's graphic art became widely appreciated throughout Europe during the late 1950's and early 1960's. Practically all his work for this time concentrates upon one theme; the Kurent. From the folklore of the Ptuj-Drava region, the Kurent is a demonic, Shrovetide being that chases away winter and heralds the beginnings of spring. In Mihelic's art the Kurent is metamorphosed and abstracted into universal symbols of life and death. Such compelling archetypes are clearly present in Kurenti, one of the artist's largest and most important works of art.
In 1992 France Mihelic donated to the town of Ptuj and its museum a large collection of his prints, drawings and sketch books. The France Mihelic Graphics Cabinet is now housed at the Ptuj Regional Museum.
