Leo Michelson was once described as the 'eternal
emigrant, eternal student'. During his long and eventful career he never
stopped studying and never stopped moving. Michelson first attended the
Imperial Academy of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the University of Dorpat.
Events surrounding the Russian Revolution forced him to flee his native
country early in the twentieth century. Michelson first moved to Munich
where he became associated with the beginnings of German Expressionism.
It was here where he first experimented with the mediums of the woodcut
and etching. By 1920 Michelson had moved yet again to France where he
became a prominent member of the famous Ecole de Paris. By this point
in time he had established a large, international reputation not only
for his prints but for his fine sculptures and paintings. At this time,
his art was included in major exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, New
York and the USSR. Finally, Leo Michelson was forced to flee Paris for the
United States in 1939 when the Nazis invaded France. |
|
Scholars have compared Leo Michelson's art both to that of Picasso
and Chagall. Michelson, however, stated that the more classic painters,
such as Titian, were his main inspiration. This most famous twentieth
century artist is now represented in museums throughout the world, including
the Paris Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Baltimore
Museum, San Diego Museum, the Art Museum of Riga, and the Museums of Tel-Aviv
and Jerusalem, Israel. |
|
Many of Leo Michelson's later woodcuts and etchings deal with
either scenes from the Bible or are based upon the fables of the ancient
Hebrew poet, Berachya Hanagdan. Combining aquatint with etching, Daniel
in the Lion's Den is a superb example of his art from this period. |
