Note:	Henry Meyer: A prominent early nineteenth century stipple and mezzotint engraver, Henry Meyer was the nephew of the painter, John Hoppner (1758- 1810). He studied engraving techniques at the Royal Academy Schools under Francesco Bartolozzi. Henry Meyer's first engravings were published in the early nineteenth century. During the following years he excelled with both portraits and decorative subjects. In the former category he engraved such individuals as Lady Hamilton, Admiral Nelson, Sir John Nicholl, Lord Hawkesbury and Guiseppe Ambrogetti. Henry Meyer was also a founding member of the Society of British Artists and exhibited much of his work with this association from 1824 to 1830.
	Many of Henry Meyer's engravings (including this original example entitled, His Grace the Duke of Richmond, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 'Charles Lennox, the 4th Duke of Richmond & Lennox') were also published by him. He also became a noted painter of portrait miniatures. In 1830, Henry Meyer was commissioned to come to New York to both paint and engrave the portraits of distinguished Americans. He remained in the United States for four years, engraving some plates for Longacre's 'National Portrait Gallery' and painting portraits such as that of President Andrew Jackson.
	According to the unpublished biography kindly provided by Peter Otton, a descendant of the Meyer family, also referenced by the British Museum (Material under consultation by their Prints and Drawings department library), Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888) was the son of Henry Meyer. Mr. Otton notes that B. F. Hoppner Meyer is the artist that immigrated to America (not) Henry Meyer. He also states that B. F. Hoppner Meyer painted the portrait of President Jackson. Note: We have checked many major reference sources (four are listed below), and there is no listing for this artist or his works of art. This only means we have not found any evidence to substantiate Mr. Otton's information concerning Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer thus far. However, we were able to find one source online, 'The National Portrait Gallery'. It contains several works of art (c. 1830 to 1840), listed as created by the artist, Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888), in its permanent collection. They are as follows, Luther Martin, Ref# NPG.77.303, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Ref# 1907.3.DUP4 , Lachlan McIntosh, Ref# UNL00925, Robert Frazer, Ref# MD40012, and Persifor Frazer, Ref# MF090008.

Condition:	Printed upon laid paper and with wide, full margins as published by Meyer in 1807. Backed onto a larger sheet of white, wove paper by a former owner. Containing slight marginal foxing as well as a restored tear running from the left edge of the sheet and ending at the plate-mark. Also very faint scuffing is apparent within the image. Else, a brilliant, early impression with full tonal values and in good condition throughout. His Grace the Duke of Richmond, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (Charles Lennox, the 4th Duke of Richmond & Lennox) represents a large, impressive example of the mezzotint art of Henry (Hoppner) Meyer.
