Henry Meyer

Henry Meyer - Lady Hamilton

Lady Hamilton

Henry Meyer's original stipple engraving, "Lady Hamilton" was created by the British artist based upon a painting by George Romney. This impression of Henry Meyer's "Lady Hamilton" is printed upon early nineteenth century China paper and tipped onto a larger sheet of wove paper and with large, full margins as published in London around 1810.

Title: Lady Hamilton
Engraver: Meyer, Henry (London, 1782 - 1847)
Designer: George Romney (Lancashire, 1734 - London, 1802)
Date: c. 1810
Medium: Original Stipple Engraving
Note: Henry Meyer: A prominent early nineteenth century stipple and mezzotint engraver, Henry Meyer was the nephew of the painter, John Hoppner (1758- 1810). He studied engraving techniques at the Royal Academy Schools under Francesco Bartolozzi. Henry Meyer's first engravings were published in the early nineteenth century. During the following years he excelled with both portraits and decorative subjects. In the former category he engraved such individuals as Lady Hamilton, Admiral Nelson, Sir John Nicholl, Lord Hawkesbury and Guiseppe Ambrogetti. Henry Meyer was also a founding member of the Society of British Artists and exhibited much of his work with this association from 1824 to 1831.
Henry Meyer engraved portraits of Lady Emma Hamilton (1765-1815) at least twice during his career. Both were based upon the paintings of George Romney. The most celebrated beauty of the day, Lady Hamilton was also famous as the mistress of Lord Nelson.
According to the unpublished biography kindly provided by Peter Otton, a descendant of the Meyer family, also referenced by the British Museum (Material under consultation by their Prints and Drawings department library), Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888) was the son of Henry Meyer. Mr. Otton notes that B. F. Hoppner Meyer is the artist that immigrated to America (not) Henry Meyer. He also states that B. F. Hoppner Meyer painted the portrait of President Jackson. Note: We have checked many major reference sources (four are listed below), and there is no listing for this artist or his works of art. This only means we have not found any evidence to substantiate Mr. Otton's information concerning Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer thus far. However, we were able to find one source online, 'The National Portrait Gallery'. It contains several works of art (c. 1830 to 1840), listed as created by the artist, Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888), in its permanent collection. They are as follows, Luther Martin, Ref# NPG.77.303, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Ref# 1907.3.DUP4 , Lachlan McIntosh, Ref# UNL00925, Robert Frazer, Ref# MD40012, and Persifor Frazer, Ref# MF090008.
George Romney: After Gainsborough and Reynolds, George Romney ranks as the greatest English portrait and historical painter of the late eighteenth century. Born into humble circumstances he was sent to Kendal as a young man to apprentice under the painter, Christopher Steele. He remained in this town until the early 1760's, making his way as a local portrait painter. George Romney then set out for London and made an almost overnight success of his career with his 1763 painting, "The Death of General Wolfe". In the following years he created some of the greatest portraits in the history of British art, including that of Lady Hamilton.
During the 1790's, George Romney was a contributor to both Boydell's Shakespeare and Milton sets. The frontis piece engraving, Milton and his Two Daughters was designed by George Romney and engraved by Benjamin Smith in 1795. Four years later these two artists again collaborated for the important Shakespeare engravings, Shakspeare Nursed by Tragedy And Comedy and The Infant Shakspeare. Attended by Nature and the Passions.
