Anna Lea Merritt - "Portrait of Sir Gilbert Scott": "In the first volume of "The American Art Review" (1880), Koehler included Anna Lea Merritt's etching of the English architect Sir Gilbert Scott, which he felt showed great improvement over her book illustrations. Merritt told Koehler that the artist George Richmond, who had done the original chalk drawing for the portrait, criticized the etching because 'it did not reproduce the style of his drawing which was bold and sketchy.' Instead, it was an individualized treatment of the subject with Merritt's own interpretation. Koehler greatly admired it: 'The marvelous combination of delicacy and strength in the modeling of the head is such that this plate may justly claim rank among the best of modern and etched portraits.'" * This portrait of "Sir Gilbert Scott" is an original etching created by Anna Lea Merritt, after the design by George Richmond. It was published in 1880 for "The American Art Review". |

Note: | Anna Lea Merritt: Along with Mary Nimmo Moran, Eliza Greatorex and Ellen Hale, Anna Lea Merritt ranks with the greatest women American painter-etchers of the nineteenth century. She studied art in London, under the painter, Henry Merritt. She later married her former teacher and spent much of her life in England. During her career, Merritt achieved an international reputation, winning awards in Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, London and Paris. Today, her original etchings and paintings are included in the collections of the National Gallery of British Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Harvard University. |
Along with her work, Anna Lea Merritt was a constant advocate of women's art and for Americans to seriously appreciate their own art. She wrote, "In America the patronage of native art used to be so exceedingly timid, though enormous prices were given for French pictures, that formerly young American artists had either to live abroad, so as to enter their native land under foreign colors, or open a studio and teach amateurs." ** Establishing her reputation first in England and France, Anna Lea Merritt chose the former route.
Anna Lea Merritt was most highly regarded for her portraits and figure studies. "Portrait of Sir Gilbert Scott" was published in 1880 by Sylvester Rosa Koehler for "The American Art Review". It is indicative of her fine work in this genre. Such art placed Anna Lea Merritt, along with Stephen Schoff and Stephen James Ferris, among the first rank of early American portrait etchers.
The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, "The American Art Review" (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such notable artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, F. S. Church, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Coleman, Alfred Brennan, Anna Lea Merritt and S. J. Ferris.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century. Anna Lea Merritt contributed two etchings to this publisher, "Portrait of Sir Gilbert Scott" (1880) and Ophelia.
