Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse's original lithograph, J. J. Rousseau, was published for the series, Galerie du Palais Royal, sometime between 1825 and 1829. An early French lithographer, J. B. Mauzaisse was most highly regarded for his portraits, both based upon his own designs and those of his contemporaries. In the case of this portrait of Jean Jacques Rousseau the designer was the famous French portrait and history painter, Baron Gerard, also known as Baron Francois Pascal Simon Gerard (1770-1837). This original lithograph is printed upon fine chine colle and mounted onto a large sheet of wove paper as published for Galerie du Palais Royal between 1825 & 1829. It is signed in the stone by Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse to the lower left and bears the official blindstamp ("Galerie lithographiee de S. A. Mgr le Duc d'Orleans") in the lower center margin. Jean Jacques Rousseau represents a beautiful, original example of the portrait art of both Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse and Baron Francois Pascal Simon Gerard. |

J. J. Rousseau (Portrait of Jean Jacques Rousseau) hails from the set of lithographs issued under the title, Galerie lithographiee de son altesse Royale Monseigneur le Duc d'Orleans, now most usually called, Galerie du Palais Royal. In 1824, the Duke of Orleans decided to have his collection of then contemporary paintings published as a series of lithographs. Around two hundred lithographs were created by various artists and published in two parts, the first in 1825 and the second in 1829. The lithographs were printed in a limited edition and were available only to the subscribers, which numbered 487. After publication the lithographic stones were erased.
Baron Francois Pascal Simon Gerard 'Francois Gerard': A major French painter of the early nineteenth century, Francois Pascal Simon Gerard studied art techniques in Paris, firstly under Pajou and Brenet and lastly (in 1786) under David. Gerard was highly influenced by David's famous classicism and remained faithful to this master's ideals throughout his career. After spending several years in Rome, Francois Gerard returned to Paris and started working for the publishers, illustrating editions of Virgil and Racine.
In the first decade of the nineteenth century Francois Gerard's portraits reached a wide renown throughout Europe. His patrons included such individuals as Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis VIII, the Emperor of Russia and the King of Prussia. He was one of the original knights of the Legion of Honour and in 1819 was created a Baron.
A Biographical Note: Jean Jacques Rousseau (Geneva, 1712 - Ermenonville, 1778) was arguably one of the most influential writers and philosophers of the eighteenth century. His great works include Discours sur Loraine de l'inegalite des homes (1754), La Nouvelle Heloise (1761), Emile (1762), Du Contrat social (1762), Confessions (1766-67) and Reveries du promeneur solitaire. For his writings Rousseau suffered official censorship and was forced to move from country to country.
J. J. Rousseau advocated that God, nature and man were essentially good and that evil arises not from original sin but from man's social environment. He saw the ownership of property as the building block for inequality and cultural discord.
