Takesada Matsutani: A contemporary Japanese
painter, sculptor and printmaker, Takesada Matsutani has been exhibiting
his abstract art in major exhibitions in Europe, America and Japan since
the mid 1960's. He received his first instructions in art in Tokyo before
moving to Paris in 1966 to continue his education. Takesada Matsutani became Stanley
Hayter's assistant at Paris's Atelier 17, in 1969. For the following six
years he filled this post and thus Town was no doubt created and printed
at this famous studio. |
|
Since his association with Atelier 17, Takesada Matsutani has exhibited
his art throughout the world. Some of the most important printmaking exhibitions
his art has been featured in include the 1986 exhibition at the Musee de
Louvain-la-Neuve, France (along with Chillida, Tapies, Miro and others)
and the 1987 showing at the Galerie Eugen Lendl, in Graz. As well, a Matsutani
lithograph was awarded a Bronze Prize at the Osaka Triennale in 1990. |
|
Since 1979, Takesada Matsutani has also devoted his talents
to the construction of installations. The Japanese Government has awarded
him the title of 'Kumi Sugai', which is given to the leading Japanese artist
living and working in France. |
|
Many galleries around the world now include Takesada Matsutani's original
art in their permanent collections. Some of these are the Davison Art Center,
Wesleyan University, the Museum of Art, Lodz, the Museum of Contemporary
Arts, Helsinki, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. |
|

early abstract art. Juxtaposing black and white with vibrant color and etching
with silkscreening, it is really two prints joined to form one compelling
image. Town was printed and published in a small edition of only
thirty signed impressions. |
