Hector Martin's original lithograph, Gorges d'Apremont (Gorges of Apremont) was issued in Paris by L'Artiste in 1846, several months after the artist tragically died at the age of twenty-one. From 1846 through 1848 L'Artiste posthumously published at least five original lithographs by Hector Martin. This original impression bears the publisher's name, "L'Artiste", the title “Gorges d’Apremont”, the artist's name, "H. Martin pinx. et lith.", & the printer's details "Imp. Bertauts, Paris" along the upper & lower margins. The Bibliotheque Nationale de France includes an impression of Gorges d’Apremont in its permanent collection and it may be viewed under the number, 1846 (SER4, T5). This is a fine original example of the lithographic and landscape art created by the French artists, Hector Martin. |
Title: | Gorges d'Apremont (Gorges of Apremont) |
Artist: | Martin, Hector (France. c. 1825 -1846) |
Date: | 1846 |
Medium: | Original Lithograph |
Publisher: | L'Artiste, Paris |
Printer: | Bertauts, Paris |
Source: | L'Artiste, Paris (IV Serie. – Tome V) |
Note: | Hector Martin: Surprisingly, my initial researches on the life and art of Hector Martin netted very little. His name appeared in none of the sources one would expect, such as Benezit’s voluminous, Dictionnaire, or in Henri Beraldi’s, Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle. Yet, as one can clearly see from such a fine, atmospheric work as Gorges d’Apremont, this lithograph appears to be from a more than competent hand, and one that bears stylistic similarities to the great French landscape art of the period, now referred to as the Barbizon School. |
Three Hector Martin lithographs are listed in the permanent collection of the British Museum; two original landscapes, "Pecheur Champenois", registration number 1889,0608.427, and "Un Chemin" registration number 1889,0608,426. The museum also includes one genre scene "Jeunesse d'Hoffmann", based upon the design of Jean-Francois Gigoux (1806-1894), registration number 2009,7022.5. All three impressions listed in the museum bear the publication address “Marchant Ed.r Alliance des Arts, r Rivoli 140”. The museum supplies the following information: Hector Martin ‘flourished’ from 1830 to 1850 and was both a printmaker and publisher whose address was rue de Richelieu, no. 63, Paris.
This impression of "Gorges d'Apremont" was published in 1846 by L'Artiste, the same year Hector Martin died. It is listed in the "Table Des Matieres of the L'Artiste issue, Novembre et Decembre 1845, Janvier et Fevrier 1846, IV Serie. – Tome V., page. 2, Gravures, Dixieme Livraison' as Georges D’Apremont, dessin de H. Martin". The Gallica, Biblioteca Nationale de France includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection and may be viewed on their site under the Museum Number, 1846 (SER4, T5). Both the Bibliotheque Nationale de France impression and this original lithograph bear the same inscription content, the publisher's name, "L'Artiste" in the upper margin and the title, “Gorges d'Apremont”, the artist's name, "H. Martin pinx et lith", & the printer's details "Imp. Bertauts, Paris" along the lower margin.
"Un Chemin" was also published by L'Artiste in 1846, but that impression does not bear the title in the lower margin. It is listed in the table of contents of the 1846 L'Artiste issue, "Septiemer livraison, Paysage d’Hector Martin lithographie par lui-meme d’apres son tableau refuse au Salon". The Bibliotheque Nationale includes an impression "Un Chemin" in their permanent collection, museum number, 1846 (SER4, T7). In 1848, L'Artiste published three other Hector Martin lithographs entitled, "Pecheur Champenois", "Metairie Bourbonnaise", and "Paysage de Feu". The Bibliotheque Nationale de France includes impressions of the 1848 lithographs which can be viewed under their museum number 1848 (SER4, T11). And lastly, "Jeunesse d'Hoffmann" was published by L'Artiste in 1847 and is listed in the table of contents for the 1847 L'Artiste issue, "Onzieme Livraison, La Jeunesse d’Hoffmann, dernier dessin d’Hector Martin, d’apres (after) M. J. Gigoux". An impression of "Jeunesse d'Hoffmann" can be viewed at the Bibliotheque Nationale under their number, 1847 (SER4, T08). It is important to note that the L'Artiste impressions of 1846, 1847, and 1848 do not bear the "Marchant" name & address, or the "Alliance des Arts" inscription printed in the lower margin.
One satirical print bearing this address and the name of ‘Martin’ as the publisher is also in the British Museum’s collection.
Some of this information seems somewhat incongruous. The satirical print bearing the publisher’s name, ‘Martin’, is completely at odds with his delicate work as a landscape artist. Martin, after all, is a fairly common last name in France and elsewhere. I therefore doubt Hector Martin, the landscape painter and lithographer, was the publisher of satirical art.
In the collection of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts is a lithograph portrait of Hector Martin by Jean Francois Gigoux (Numero d’inventaire ENSBA: PC 19493) *. Gigoux and Martin must have been on familiar terms. As mentioned earlier, Martin created a lithograph based upon a design by Gigoux. The portrait was also published by L'Artiste, but the museum supplies no date for its issue.
Digging within the inventory lists for L'Artiste I found that the portrait dates from 1846. It is listed in the 1846 issue of L'Artiste, IV Serie, Tome, VII, Gravures, Septieme livraison, as “Hector Martin, (portrait of the artist), d’apres (after) M. J. Gigoux, par MM. Paturot et Cisneros”. Our mainly unknown artist is depicted as a handsome and pensive young man. What is really of interest, however, is the hand written note that appears along the lower margin of the museum impression. It reads, “Hector Martin, peintre-Paysagiste, mort a 21 ans” (painter-Landscapist, dead at 21 years). This inscription was probably penned by the initial owner of the print, and while one can’t take an anonymous notation as the gospel truth, a very early death makes sense. An artist who died at the age of twenty-one would likely have had little opportunity to exhibit at the Paris Salon or elsewhere before his demise. Lacking an exhibition history, the artist simply would not be listed in the usual sources.
A young artist would have even less opportunity to exhibit his work if he was constantly in the country-side, or in the forests of Fontainebleau, and, as Martin’s landscapes kept reminding me of the Barbizon School, I scoured through all the books I could find upon this subject. In 1872 Alfred Sensier wrote, Souvenirs sur Theodore Rousseau. Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) was perhaps the greatest artist of the Barbizon School. He was one of the first painters to paint in the open air (plein air) and specialized in wooded scenes and detailed depictions of trees. Because of his non-academic stance and style, his work was constantly rejected by the Salon, so much so that he earned the nickname, ‘le grand refuse’. Thus for many years Rousseau would not submit his work to the Paris Salon.
In Souvenirs sur Theodore Rousseau, Sensier writes this brief passage, “Hector Martin, eleve de Rousseau, sa mort.” (student of Rousseau, dead). ** Martin, then, studied under Rousseau, which explains the fine landscape techniques in his original lithographs.
Light was finely shed upon the life and death of Hector Martin by viewing the original text of L'Artiste for the year 1846, which is reproduced in its entirety by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France***. On page 97 (IV Serie, Tome VII, 1846), reference number 1846 (SER4, T7), an article and obituary of Hector Martin appears. The author is no doubt the novelist, poet, literary and art critic, Arsene Houssaye (1815-1896), who was an editor and chief writer (“Redacteur en Chef”) for L'Artiste during the 1840’s. Here it is confirmed that Hector Martin died in 1846 at the age of twenty-one. Houssaye also writes that Hector Martin was orphaned at an early age and raised by his venerable and poor grandmother, who encouraged him in his pursuit of art. For a period of five years Martin studied mainly on his own, but took informal lessons both from Jean Francois Gigoux and Theodore Rousseau. Both artists took kindly to the young and needy Martin, and probably provided free lessons and advice.
In the year of his death, Hector Martin submitted two landscapes and several other works to the Paris Salon. The Jury rejected all of them. Politics was likely involved as the jury members would take a biased view against any artist associated with ‘le grand refuse’ (Rousseau). In any case the rejection apparently had devastating results upon the young artist. Arsene Houssaye writes that shortly thereafter Hector Martin died of pain and misery, and he vehemently blames the juried members of the Salon for his premature demise. Whether Hector Martin took his own life or died of other causes will never be known.

L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Gorges d'Apremont" by Hector Martin is a striking example of the lithographic art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1846. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
Bertauts, Publishing & Printing Firm (c. 1830's - c. 1970's): The renowned French lithographic publisher and printer, Bertauts was considered one of the finest printers in Europe during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the Beaus-Arts – de la Lithographie et des Imprimeurs, Bertauts began printing lithographs after 1826 and established his lithographic firm in 1836. During the 1830's and into the 1870's, original lithographs printed by Bertauts appeared in such publications as, "L'Artiste, Paris" (1831-1904), "Album du Salon" (1839-1844), "Les Beaux-Arts" (1843-1844), "Les Artistes Contemporains", (1845 - 1853), "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes, Paris" (1850 - 1862), "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" (1858), the "Gazette des beaux arts" (1859-1939), "Souvenirs d' Artistes" (1860-1876), and other major 19th century art journals of the time. Gorges d'Apremont (Gorges of Apremont) was printed by Bertauts in Paris for L'Artiste in 1846.
